1976 Jeep Cherokee Overview

The sporty 1976 Jeep Cherokee was a powerhouse 4x4 marketed specifically to off-road drivers looking for a rugged two-door utility vehicle. The '76 Cherokee was pretty basic, as far as comfort and luxury went: the days of the plush, tricked-out SUV were long in the future when this tough wagon ruled the four-wheeling niche.

Under the hood, the '76 Jeep Cherokee offered a lot of power and torque. The basic plant was a 258 cubic inch, 4.2 liter AMC inline-6 engine. Drivers looking for more power could upgrade to a choice of two V-8 mills: a 360 cubic inch, 5.9 liter or a 401 cubic inch 6.6 liter plant with an impressive 280-horsepower output.

The 1976 Cherokee was a solid piece of Detroit steel. Slightly lighter and more nimble than the Wagoneer (from which it was a spinoff), the Cherokee was sturdy enough to take a beating off-road and on. You'll still find plenty of these on the road today, some of them all dressed up by tuners and low-riders.
