The 450sel — The Mercedes w116 Series - with the 450SEL as the flagship - established Mercedes Benz as The Manufacturer of The Best Luxury Sedans In The World - setting the standards for quality, workmanship, technology and resale. The rear compartment was limousine-like in spaciousness and the optional sunroof ( standard in the US ) was the largest offered at date of manufacture. Leather, Wood, High Quality Materials, Fit & Finish. Produced from 1973 through 1980, the w116 was the second most successful S-Class in terms of sales - except for the w126 that followed. ( The vehicle pictured is a 1975 450SEL with 110k miles. It was sold several years ago. )

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: The w116 Mercedes 450SEL was the car to own or be driven in the late 70's. This model established Mercedes world dominance in the marketplace.

Cons: Great power means poor gas mileage. You need a mechanic who knows these cars. Parts becoming expensive.
