Frankenstein "frankie" The Rust Duster — It has been an experience owning and working on this car. It has been know to scare off future "Mopar" buyers it has never failed to impress people with its "qualities." I have rebuilt the engine and done a major overhaul on the suspension and rear-end. Despite this quality work the car still has its natural tendencies. The torsion bars are way too soft, it lacks a sway-bar, the rear leafs are too long and even with truck leafs spliced in axle wrap is unavoidable. The slant six is under-powered and maintenance is a pain because of how it is mounted in the car. It did perk up a little bit with 3.55 gears but 55 mph is 3 grand on the tach. It is a handful on a twisty road, a school bus is a good race, and something always needs replaced. This is the first car I have actually formed a love-hate relationship with. It will see a drastic overhaul here soon, with a V8 swap (either Ford or Chevy V8) and a four speed some body work and some interior work. I'll make her a good car or die trying. I wouldn't trade her or my experience with her for the world, but I dang sure won't buy another Chrysler product ever again. Update Frankie is back and better than ever! The "indestructible" slant 6 bit the big one and I finally saw it move fast as it was dropped off the forklift at the recycling center. This Duster is new and improved featuring a 1986 Ford roller 302 small block with efi, a 4 speed SROD transmission, and a custom vinyl roof delete. With the Ford engine the reliability is fantastic, nothing has gone wrong yet with it, unlike the slant 6 which was an uphill battle to keep running. The four speed transmission includes overdrive, so the low gears offer great acceleration while the overdrive makes interstate driving a nice relaxing cruise. Gas mileage is excellent and the car has more than enough power now. Why Ford? Because it's cheap and reliable. I could have pulled the K member out and cut it up and put in a small block Chrylser, but I figured I beat them to the punch. Bought a 302 for $100 rebuilt it for pennies on the dollar, a 4 speed SROD transmission for $75 and I'm $3000 ahead of what just a Chrylser 4 speed would have cost. Used some of that savings to fab up a transmission crossmember and some motor mounts and slapped it together. The car still does have a few issues... The original instrument cluster is showing it's age and cheapness (soon to be replaced with all aftermarket gauges). The front torsion bars are still soft, the 302 is lighter than the slant 6 so handling improved slightly as the weight was shifted back a little, the sheet metal on the car is flimsy (you can push the firewall in and out with your hand, hate to see this thing in an accident..), the wiper design is still terrible (very noisy and has started to leak around the spindles), the factory wiring is confusing, and the parts that are still Chrysler are still overpriced. However taking this thing to a car show, seeing all the Mopar guys come up and say "Man that thing sounds mean, what's that got a 340?" and then watch them either get upset or walk away speechless as you pop the hood makes it worth it. And yes it is my daily driver and always will be.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Good looking body style, Ford rear axle, Talon racing style bucket seats, Ford motor, fuel injection, Ford transmission, overdrive comfortable interior, nice on long trips, disc brakes, cassette am-fm radio, good heater, cheap price,

Cons: Torison bar suspension, terrible handling (pushes bad in the corners and has an insane amount of body roll), typical 70's rust, terrible wiper linkage design, parts are more expensive than a Ford or Chevy counterpart.

An Absolutely Beautiful Car For Anyone To Have. —

Pros: This is a great car.  It handles great and gets me where i need to go.  With the engine i currently have in it, it doesn't have its full potential in horsepower but it does fairly well on gas.

Cons: When you instal larger engines, it does pretty bad on gas.

The Duster — This is not my actual car, but very close. Same dull black color. Mine was fairly rusty, had like 300000 miles on it. The 225 slant six was just about worn totally out. The floors had been patched with tin and the the front seats were from a ford festiva. But, it did get me around for a while. I'd like to have another one some day. I drove this when I was about 18-19.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Looked pretty cool, everybody liked it. The headliner was cardboard and all my friends signed it.

Cons: Rusty, full of bondo. Slant 6 was very tired, but managed to get the thing down the road.

It's A Great Car But Not Very Dependible. — When we first bought the Duster, it needed a lot of repairs. It's still not in perfect condition, but in time it will become better. The Duster drives pretty well, but every so often when at a stop it takes an extra push to get the pick up. It's nice to look at and definitely stands out.

Pros: It's pretty. It has lots of room; the back seat folds down and opens to the trunk giving extra space for hauling. It has amazing power steering. It's very tough and won't scratch easily. The breaks work great, which is always a major plus.

Cons: There are a lot of repairs that need done to it. Before we bought it in 2007 it had not been used in well over ten years. The speedometer is broken. The breaks tend to squeal. There has to be a lock on the fuel door to keep people from sifting gas.

Good Looking, Classic. — Mine isn't the 340 V8, it's got the 225 slant six, but it gets good gas mileage.

Pros: It looks beautiful, it's carbureted, and it's MOPAR!

Cons: Slant six.

Solid — Bought this car in 1983 for $40 from my exwifes aunt, a 1 owner w/40k miles (a steal). We needed something reliable and the old gal was a sweetheart. Gold Duster, slant 6, like new.

Pros: Reliable and cherry

Cons: Typical mid 70's mopar crap handling

My First Car — It only lasted me for 3 weeks, but the previous owner never took care of it. The oil came out like toothpaste and I think the fresh oil is what killed it.

Pros: Lots of potential. Could have easily dropped a small block in it.

Cons: Previous maintenance was lacking
