We last talked about this one in July. But today bloggers are babbling like babies about the Honda CR-Z concept, which reportedly is finally to be released for production, first in Japan (February 2010), then in Europe and the U.S. They are right to be excited: This is (I think) the world’s first hybrid sports car slated for production in any quantity. It looks good, and what specs have been revealed sound good.

If you’re not into sports cars, you might as well stop reading.
In my mind, while certainly not practical, sports cars are the backbone of all things automotive. They represent the pinnacle of engineering and possibility; but like any other car, sports cars come and go. Here are some we wish would come and then just stay.
Acura NSX

Here’s a piece of trivia: Honda went to Italian design firm Pininfarina in 1984 to design the car that became the NSX. In 2005 the NSX was discontinued… then in 2008 hopes for a next-generation NSX were dashed when Honda cancelled its plans for the car. Now, there’s news again that Honda may create a lower priced NSX, which means it would probably fall out of supercar territory. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather never see a new NSX than see one with that awful Acura beak that’s going around these days. Bring it back right, or let it rest forever!

2009 Infiniti FX50
It’s certainly not true that the Japanese are the only ones to produce ugly cars. But theirs have a singular look that anyone can easily identify. We show you three models here, two Nissans and an Acura—good cars, yet no one should buy them unless they want to be accused of being tasteless.
Our big winner has to be the Infiniti FX50, whose appearance Top Gear likened to that of a whale shark. This luxo crossover has achieved good reviews, but imagine driving it to a top restaurant where the parking attendant snickers. And others point at your headlights.

Many tears have been shed for the Honda S2000 (left), which will be discontinued after this model year. It’s a great sports car that had a wide appeal: 65,000 sold in the U.S., and over 110,000 worldwide.
Now the Japanese car magazine Best Car has run a story that’s been reiterated and replicated around the globe about an S2000 successor.

When I was entering high school, I helped my dad restore a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. (By “helped,” I mean “watched,” but I still felt involved just by being there as he worked!)
As the Barrett-Jackson auction in Arizona ended last week, I remembered that old Toronado and wondered which cars from today my son might someday collect or even restore. Of course there isn’t a scientific way to predict what models will skyrocket in value, but we can certainly take educated guesses.
Below are four modern cars I believe will eventually sit behind red ropes at auctions or await restoration in garages across America.
Cadillac Escalade

I could’ve really used any full-size American SUV here – the Suburban, the Navigator, the Yukon, etc. I think the Escalade is unique, because it’s the only one that has taken on an image like no others: A symbol of excess used by athletes and rappers nationwide. In 40 years or so, we’ll look back on these and remember a time when America truly believed that size mattered.

Admist all the automotive news about hybrids and compact SUVs and fuel-efficient engines and Smart cars no bigger than a size 11 shoe, there slip occasionally a few tasty tidbits about unabashed modern-day supercars. Admittedly some of these cars seem a little out of place in this day and age of soaring gas prices, but perhaps that’s what makes them so desirable. They’re sort of the bad boys of the automotive industry, and their numbers are small yet growing.
