Having problems with starting after engine is warm. Replacing cam syncronizer. How do I correctly adjust the timing?

Only have to drive about ten miles. The farther/longer I drive, the more it smokes. I only see it when I turn the car off but can smell it when idling...like going through a drive-thru.
