Avg. Dealer Rating: (4 reviews) "I spent the day visiting almost every Bob Howard lot there is. From Edmond to Oklahoma City to Mid West City and will probably buy from the one in Edmond. HOWEVER out of all of them this particular lot exemplifies what everybody hates about buying a car. Okay so- sit back- its a doozie. So I just have this one day to find a used car to replace my car which was just totaled in an accident. I have a very strict budget and two pretty simple request: Good MPG and under 70,000 miles. First I went through all the listings here on CarGuru finding cars that fit my needs then sent in emails to the dealers. I sat up appointments through out the day and all day had great communications with different sales people so that when I arrived they were ready for me and had the cars I had requested ready to view. No muss, no fuss, in and out and onto the next lot so I can make an informed decision and maximizing my only day off to do this. Every Bob Howard lot I used was understanding, friendly and really helpful. Not this one. First I get an email from Chris the Internet Sales Manager for Bob Howard Hyundai telling me he got my requests and will be in touch and to be sure and make sure I take his address off the Spam filter as " Nothing is worse than communication that goes unread by being trapped in a spam filter." because he says "Having worked with customers that choose to use the internet as an alternative to the traditional car buying experience, I have learned that it is still important that we speak to each other. Although we will communicate using e-mail for a wide variety of information, my most satisfied customers are the ones I speak with as early as possible in their purchasing process. If a phone number was included, I will attempt to contact you personally to follow up on the quote you have requested." Never heard from him again. Next I get an email from the sales manager Eric saying the cars I wanted to see where excellent choices and he looked forward to seeing me. I called that morning to confirm and left a message with no reply, called again when I was on my way, no reply (calling cell and work) and finally got through to him at office number and told him I would be there in 10 minutes. He said great and when I get there just come and ask for him and they'll get me all taken care of. When I arrived I pulled up in front of the showroom to park, finish a call and to quickly eat a sandwich as I hadn't eaten all day. A sales person came up to the curb when I parked and that kinda got me as I had at least been allowed to get out of my car and start for the door before being approached at the other lots and made me think "does he not realize what he is doing has been made fun of/complained about used car salesmen for so long its almost embarrassing he's doing this but since I was staying in the car for a minute I figured he's mosy on after he saw I was gonna be a second. Nope. The saleman stopped at the end of the hood of my car where I was parked and just stood there and did not budge or look away for a second. Like he was a starving man and I was a ham sandwich he stared at me sitting in my car. He would not look away so I pulled out my phone thinking this would give him a clue I would be a second and to back off. Nope. So I dialed the number and cradled the phone and pulled out my sandwich and began unwrapping it. I peeked up thinking surely this did the trick. Nope. Still standing. Still staring right at me. No anwer. I hung up and took a bite and tried to relax for one second on this whirlwind car buying day but all I could feel was him staring at me. I am a grown adult man who has been in some pretty weird/scary situations but this was the creepiest most uncomfortable thing I think I have ever been part of. I was so self conscious trying to eat with him just standing and staring at me that I finally had to raise a finger to tell him just a minute. He nodded but didn't move or look away so I finally opened the door told him I had an appointment with Eric and could he tell him I'd be right in just so he would go. That should have been my first clue I was about to enter the old school zone of how to sell a used car (through aggression, misleading, dazzling, not listening and saying things like "if I got your payments in an area you felt comfortable with can I get you in this car today?) and I should have turned and ran. Did I? Nope. Okay: So I quickly just put away lunch and went inside and it took awhile for them to find Eric so I waited and when he came over he he brought over a very nice saleslady and said she would be handling my needs today and walked off. Okay. She then pulled out a sheet of paper and asked for name, phone number, what kind of car. . .I told her I had submitted all my info already, Eric should have all my info and is supposed to have the two cars I requested to see pulled up and ready to drive as I have more appointments that day and had just called to confirm and had already taken care of all this to save time. She said I didn't have to fill out the paper and walked away. She came back (I am assuming with no help from Eric) and started asking what I wanted in a car. I told her I had already picked out the two on her lot that fit within my parameters as I only have today to look for cars and so had already gone through her inventory and picked out what I could afford because I am also being very strict budget wise. She asked which cars I had picked out. I told her I didn't know as I had submitted so many to so many dealers but the other ones I had visited that day had the emails, info and cars all ready for me. Thats why I submitted all that. I apologized and told her I didn't mean to be rude but I'm on a mission and if you could just get the info from Eric and the cars pulled around I would be very thankful. Besides I had just spoke to Eric on the phone confirming I was coming and he had emailed me about the cars I wanted saying they were in stock and excellent choices and just confirmed me coming to the two cars so he will know what they are. "Well," she said "It will help me if I know what your taste is." sigh Not listening. I'm not just walking in to see what you might have cause I'm thinkin about getting a new car. I am getting a new car and you have two that fit my needs. May I see them? She seemed knew and was sweet so I took a breath and told her she didn't have to do all this "get to know your customer" routine they teach you. I'm in. I'm buyin. I did all the work for her lets skip ahead. "But what do you LIKE in a car? If I don't know your taste in cars I'll just be wasting your time maybe bringing around something you don't like." Really? You're really not gonna listen to a word I am saying? See its not about taste, its about budget because I've had big luxury cars and just wanted to pay cash for this one with no payments and it wont be as nice as I am used to but it will be more economical. And you don't need to figure out anything to show me. I went and did it for ya. If we could just ask Eric for that email. "Eric? He's not feeling good today." Huh? So he can't access his email of what does that have to do with. . . She interrupts telling me if she knows the kind of car I like it won't matter if it costs a little more than I want to spend then she started in about financing the extra money to get the car I wanted so I might as well tell her my likes and she'll get me the perfect car and not to worry about the price. At this point I begged her to please see the two I requested. (personally if they weren't such amazing buys I would have left but they had these 2012 and 2013 used cars with low miles and low price tags that were the find of the decade and I was willing to push on for a chance to buy one.) I told her they were almost new with very low miles, they were Hyundai and VERY inexpensive surely she had had tones of enquiries so far. She didn't know what they were so we pulled up the website and I found them for her. My first clue should have been the great price and that the pictures (unlike all the others) were not taken of the car on the lot but were stock photos from the manufacturer. "Oh. Umm Yeah. Those sold today." Uh huh. But when I called 15 minutes ago why did Eric confirm they were here to see? No answer she keeps carrying on "Well I have some things that you will like and will work for you they are just a little more expensive than those but we can get you financed and in one today" Oh crap. Did I just fall for the old bait and switch? The oldest trick in the book and as she brought me out to cars that cost almost double what I was wanting to spend and telling me to "don't look at the price tags" I knew I had. She was very sweet and we drove some amazing cars that there was no way I could afford and was brought back to start talking financing. I don't want to borrow I want to pay cash can I see SOMETHING that fits in my budget? "I know you. You won't like them. Now if I can get your payment down to one or two hundred dollars a month. . ." I told her if there was a car MAYBE one or two thousand out of my budget I might borrow that much but the car would have to knock me out as I had already seen plenty great cars that fit all my needs in my budget. "Well you can't just borrow two thousand dollars you gotta borrow five thousand but that'll give you a little cash in your pocket and help your credit score if you pay if off early." I tried over and over and no one would listen to me, "show me a car that fit my needs" and they just kept trying to run my credit and "get serious" about the paperwork so her "manager knows we're serious then he can start telling me what the cars we looked at will REALLY cost and what deals he can do for us." Okay so its up to the customer to perform by letting them ding their credit by running it in order to get what they need given to them by this unseen manager i.e. the price of the car. No. I don't think so. How about I want to know what the cost of the car is and THEN if I like it we can run my credit but not vise versa. Ugh. On and on we went. I kept asking price and she kept answering payment. "How much is the car?" Her: "Would $200 a month work for you?" In one of her many trips to talk to her manager about this or that I asked if I could hop on her computer. I got online at her desk and on their website and pulled up their inventory and found two awesome cars that fit in my budget (noticing the two that I originally came in for were still posted as "for sale") but here are another two that will work and I asked to see those. Amazingly they were (gasp!) "sold out" (they're on the website why?) Anyway I moved on and I found an awesome 2009 Hyundai Sonata Sedan FWD red just a thousand dollars above my budget. At this point my saleslady returned with Robert who had a big smile and hand shake and explained he was a manager there and wanted to clear up any misunderstandings I might be having and started HIS version of the "Buy something you can't afford cause we'll finance you so who cares about the cost??" I explained my situation to him and he said "So she is finding you some really great cars to look at and see what you think and when you decide which one you want come on back in and see me and we'll get the paper work started" Oh My God. They really, really just won't hear what I am saying. I tell him no. Point to the red car on the screen that fits my budget and say "This is the one I want to see please. Lets drive it." "Oh I'm not sure if that one sold or not. Yeah I think that one sold yesterday. BUT, we have a black one that is the same year make model everything. Its posted right here. (he shows its listing to me on the site then begins to walk off saying) "I'll go pull it around." Wait. What? "But" I said trying to stop him "Wait. Why is this?" You see the Blue Book suggested cost of the black one (according to their website anyway) is $15,876 but the missing red one is (surprise surprise) $11,854. A FOUR thousand dollar difference in the same make, model and year? PLUS the red cheaper one had almost 10,000 miles LESS on it but the black one, the one you actually have for sale, is $4000 more? "Upgrades" my just reappeared saleslady says. Ok. I've heard of upgrades. But $4000?? Thats a hell of an upgrade. Anyway the cars looked the same to me and I really was curious what kind of upgrades would cost so much so I asked the difference. They never really answered but went and pulled the black one around for me to drive. (It being almost $4000 above my budget.) I asked for the red one and I was told again it sold. Really? Every affordable car you have is still listed on your website but are sold? Thats odd. Unless they don't really exist and are just posted as bait to lure in idiots like me with their amazing price then told they sold but that they can put me in a better car than those no problem. Just sign here. I asked if these cars even existed and my saleslady said of course and that red cheaper car didn't sell. It was in the shop just being repaired. Oh. Great. Maybe I was wrong. Sorry. She goes on "It was broken and in the shop and had been in there for awhile cause they sold it but it got returned because it had a blown head gasket and they were replacing that and that the car had been and will be in the shop for awhile before its sellable again. (so its on the website why??) I figure I will check out the black one so I know what the red one is like and if I like it I'll wait on the red one but needed to know what on the black one should I not expect on the red one? Those upgrades. At $4000 I thought it would be pretty easy to tell me what upgrades the black one had the red one wouldn't so on my way out the door I asked again the difference in the two as I had done a side by side comparison on line at her desk through THEIR website and couldn't see any and it didn't come up with any. So then Eric or Robert, I don't know- Mr. Smiles, started saying all this nonsense and I finally said why will no one here listen to me? And walked to drive the car I could never WOULD never be able to afford or pay for without just drowning in debt again. At this point he huffed and pushed his friend out of the way and marched up to me saying "WHAT? WHAT? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?" like I was the most annoying person in the world and maybe I was but if they would just listen to what I am saying and answer me rather than to just keep pushing their upsale and finance agenda on me this wouldn't be so weird. Anyway I said "What could possibly make a $4000 difference in two cars of the same make and model and year and the cheaper one had almost 10,000 less miles on it? I am just really curious." he said "Features! This one has a sunroof! Its got an Infinity sound system (or something like that) its got leather seats! Features!" I told him I get "features' and I'm not meaning to be rude I just want to know if I decide to wait on the red one what I will encounter on the black one I should not expect on the red. I just don't get $4000 in "features" so we drove the black car and went past the shop. Out of curiousity I asked if we could stop and see the red car and my nice saleslady said sure. I got out and walked up to it and looked inside and lo and behold a sunroof, infinity sound system, leather seats. Features! The cars were exactly the same but in color. We went back and knowing the red car was never meant to be sold at that price but was used to get folks in the have them leave in the $4000 more black one I told them I love the car and I will wait for the red one to be fixed and take it. Its perfect price and I love it. "Well no the mechanic is gone to mechanic school (mechanic school??) for about another week or so and it's gonna take awhile. To fix it" Eric now tells me "Thats okay I'll wait." "Well What if we could get you in the black one with a monthly payment you could afford?" No thanks . I'll take the one with less miles and (after the online discount) is almost $3000 less." Then Eric tried to explain "Well the black car you see is an ELS package where as the red one is just the ES package and that where the difference comes in and. . ." uh huh. Even the saleslady couldn't take it anymore and I think just out of sheer embarrassment at how painfully obvious it was he was BSing his way out of being busted she said "We went and saw the red one. They are both the same." I prefer the red one anyway so I'll wait for it. What do I need to do to secure it for me? See I had been feeling weird all day because I couldn't figure out why everyone was so touchy about the questions I was asking until I realized (being the cheapo that I am) I had bit on all of their bait and switch things and I just couldn't let go of wanting a good deal and I was questioning things they couldn't find answers for. See what was supposed to happen was I was supposed to shrug off the cars I wanted to see being sold and ease into a much nicer car without objection because these nice folks were gonna make it so I could drive a $17,000 car for only $100 a month so shut up and don't make waves and get yourself a kick ass car!" Unfortunately my hunt for the best deal anywhere was more stubborn than their sales tricks and I wouldn't let go. When I said I would wait for the red one I could see Eric was at a lost and was thinking as fast as he could. After a minute he seriously started saying that the price I was seeing on line now was going to go up because they are having to work on the red car because before they didn't know it had something needing to be fixed but now that they do once they add the cost of repairs to its final cost it's gonna end up costing about what the black one costs if not if you liked the black one lets get you in it so why don't we go ahead and run your credit . ." and that's when I left. Stay away from this mess. They don't have any of the great deals that get you in but they have lots of financing solutions for you to get you in a car they do have even if its not in your budget. They don't listen. They lie. They play shell games and operate in a business model that I thought had died after the mortgage loan fiasco that almost destroyed America. Encouraging people to needlessly go into debt so you can make a profit is unacceptable. If you're not making a profit from your car sales then you need to examine how you're running your business because when you operate this way sales people become so desensitized to it they will sign up anybody not ever once stopping to consider how this could hurt or destroy some trusting unsuspecting person who came in for a nice $8000 car, leaves the lot with a $19,000 car then two months later had no car because its been repossessed. One of Bob Howard's sheep has strayed and he better wrangle it back into the herd before it hurts itself or someone else. I just can't believe this stereotypical example of bad used car salesmen still even exists. Anyway I am sure they are just doing what they have been trained to do but don't say you weren't warned. If there is no picture of the actual car on the lot and the deal sounds too amazing to be true, it is. As for me I ended up finding a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid with only 50,000 miles on it, gets 43 miles to the gallon, is in beautiful condition and was $3000 below my budget so there is real proof that you don't have to get something you don't want or need or can't afford because they say so. By using and setting very strict filters you'll find exactly what you are looking for and sometimes something even better! I did. Oh! and P.S.-- I just checked on this site, another popular car search site and Bob Howard Hyundai's site and not only is EVERY car I was told was sold or in the shop still posted as "for sale" but right here on they are not only one of the first "Great Deals" to pop up under certain searchs but they also pop up as "Newly listed" Pitiful."
