6.8 litres per hundred - next question?

Carries almost as much as SUV's we've owned, reasonably peppy, perfect for the two of us.

Can't stop playing with the little in-dash information centre and am fixated on the 'average economy' feature.  Best tank of gas - 6.3 litres per hundred with cruise set at 95.  Best range - 870 k on a single fill.

24,500 trouble free k's except for a front sway bar end, under warranty and repaired instantly.

Pros — Incredibel highway mileage, fair in town if I keep the foot off the 'go' pedal
Cons — Cheap interior materials, need to invest in fabric protection

With high gas prices remaining a sure thing for a while, I wanted to see if the HHR was a possible answer to my call for help. My call for a more fuel efficient car from an American company with plenty of room for friends and cargo. Even though the test drive was short, it was long enough to get a good feel for the car. Honestly, the car surprised me. Acceleration, while not like a V6, was really good with plenty of giddy-up. Turning was okay with not too much lean and I think it could handle being a little sporty. Blind spots might take some getting used to with the design of the windows as you work your way back, but the large side mirrors help you out quite a bit. Not a squeak or a rattle came out of the car which impressed me. The only other negative things I noted were the automatic having only 4 speeds instead of 5 (also can't have a automanual or manumatic...yet), getting used to the window controls being placed on the center stack and the occasional numbness from the steering. Other than that, I can recommend this to everyone else if they want an economical compact with plenty of room for friends and stuff with features that won't break the bank. Chevy has a hit on its hands with the HHR and I'm definitely considering this for myself in the future.

Pros — 2.4L engine = plenty of pep and great fuel economy, monsoon system sounds great, auxiliary port for MP3 player, seats five comfortably, plenty of cargo room, fairly sporty ride
Cons — power steering feels a little numb at times (but not too frequently), not used to window switches being placed on the center stack, automatic still has only 4 gears in a 5 gear world

Talk about fun to drive, and it's roomy to boot! I was skeptical about the HHR until my husband convinced me to drive one.  The rest is history!!

Pros — 20 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and with the back seat folded down, it can haul lots of stuff!
Cons — The only thing I'd change is the color - this one is black.  It looks nice with all the chrome, but it gets hot!

I had this as a rental car while driving down the PCH in California.  What a mistake.

First the performance.  There was none.  While negotiating the turns of Big Sur, it was apparent that this car has the bare minimum to make it a car.  The steering had a large dead band and was generally unresponsive.  There was a good bit of body roll and the ride was noisy.  While on the freeway, it was difficult to get to freeway speed as this car is seriously under equipped in the horsepower department.  The braking was inconsistent and not very confident.  This is by far the worst car I have ridden in or been a passenger in for a long time.

While this car was fairly new and still in good shape, the overall design of the car was very poor.  The interior was monochromatic and boring.  One of the worst aspects was the severe curve on the bottom side of the doors.  The back corner of the front doors sticks out like a large sickle and it caught my leg several times when exiting the vehicle.  The only good parts about the car were the captain seats in the front.  The stereo system left much to be desired.

While some of the modified HHRs do not look too bad, the exterior appearance of the base model is very unappealing and bland.

No wonder the Detroit auto manufacturers are having a hard time when they are putting out drivel such as this car.  The sooner they go into bankruptcy, the sooner American car manufacturing can be saved.

Pros — None
Cons — Squishy suspension, no power, ugly, poorly designed
