love my car, don't love the base 2.0 it comes with (i shoulda spent the other $800 on the 1.8t).  other than that, has a lot more miles than average (333k), and has held up really well with nary a major problem.  i still get 33mpg with it, and the handling is still crisp, even with snow tires and worn springs/shocks/struts.

clutch is the only major component that needed to be replaced (and that 300k on it!).  very easy to work on, a shadetree mechanic or budding tech can keep this car on the road very easily.

cost of ownership has been great to me, i've owned her since new, and while i may have spent thousands on her, keep in mind, $1k+ is just in oil changes (34 oil changes with mobil1).  i'd say over 333,000 miles i may have spent $4k total in maintenance, and another $600 for clutch parts and labor.

i still get a smile on my face every day when i drive her, so i guess the fun factor is still there. :)

Pros: handling, interior fit/finish, safety
Cons: electronics (pre-02)

I love my Jetta, a fun car, fun to drive, excellent road feel, great acceleration, handling & braking (ABS). occational electrical problems, repaired by my VW mechanic (now runs great). I love the look, good on gas, burns some oil (typical of 2.0L engine). great amenities and comfort with style!

Pros: Great performance & handling
Cons: fussy electonics (sensors) uses oil

I loved that car. It was perfect in the sense that it had good gas mileage, nice personality and room for the friends and lugage! However I got it when it had over 100,000 miles and there were MANY mechanical issues developing... too much to worry about at that point so I decided to get the Mini.

Pros: Practical and efficient. Best speedometer lights.
Cons: Can't think of any just don't buy one with 100000k miles

My PLATINUM MAMA. We've been through alot together. The best is still yet to come! It all started in 2001 when I discovered here in my uncle's junk yard. The previous owner flipped her a couple times across 64. The passenger's side was completely smashed in and the sunroof was almost non exsistent. After about a year of bodywork and getting all the major bugs out of the engine Platinum was reborn. In 2004 she was the focus of my senior project. Mods that were added were 18" rims undercar light system, cool air intake and tinted taillights. Not much but it got me an A for my senior project and to this day it s the standard of how much work should be put forth on a Senior project. After freshman year at ECU all my mods came off and she was completely stock again. Small additions have been added since then but we have only just begun.......again

Pros: Gas mileage is awesome
Cons: first gen for this bodystyle

The car handles well, I like the feel of it, but man does it fall apart a lot. I have put well over 50% of its value back in to it for repairs. Being a foreign car I should have seen high prices, but man 250 bucks to do a tune up on a stock car?

Pros: Handles well
Cons: Costs a lot to repair

Overall I love this car, however I do wish I would have sprung for the 1.8T or the VR6. With a miserly 115 hp this is not a performance car. I do like the pick-up it has in the 65-80 mph range. It's the 0-60 pick-up I wish I had more of.
The interior is roomy enough and decently laid out. I don't like the Soft-Touch interior, it is rubbing off.
The 2.0L engine "used" oil (1 qt per 100 miles) which was enough to ruin my engine over the first couple years I owned it. I had new rings put in to solve the problem, no more used oil...oh, and switched to synthetic at about 100K miles.
Gas mileage is adequate, about 28-30 mpg highway. Which is nice because the cost of repairs seems to be slightly higher than other cars.

Pros: Looks, Interior (except rear seats), MPG, trunk space.
Cons: Engine, although newer models are better
