1988 Mercury Cougar Reviews
| “Good Car To Mess With.” Lots of Torque, heavy but with good reason, the car was loaded for 1988. Best thing about it, it was built on the fox chassis. So most 79 to 93 mustang parts would fit. Mileage was good on the highway thanks to 2.73 gears in the axle, but in town left something to be desired.
Pros —
Cheap, reliable, easy to find parts for.
Cons —
Kinda slow, age, not exactly art.

| “'88 Was A Good Year For A Fox Body Cat” I loved this car, this was my 1st car.. the motor was a 3.8L V6, had decent power and overall pretty solid, the entire time i owned it, the only thing that needed replacing was a power steering pump which required a special tool. I owned that car for a little over 1 year and at times wish i kept it. I had a stereo system in it, a strobe kit in the reverse lights, headlights and interior as well.
Pros —
Great body lines, ran strong, good gas mileage for a car its age, handled nicely, im 6'2 and had decent interior space, EVERY Power option you can imagine including a car phone and key-less entry pad on the door
Cons —
Special tools needed to replace certain parts.

| “My First Car” It worked for as long as it could have been expected. The comfiest seats ever, but a lack of cupholders was distressing.
Pros —
It ran well for a long time.
Cons —
Eventually, age.

| “A Grown Up Sort Of Car” Mine was my mom's and thus was an odd "purple-ish" silver color. But it was a very nice car.
Pros —
nice big car
Cons —
big car

| “Best $300.00 Bucks I Ever Spend” This is the second cougar I have owned and this one is the lesser model, but still a good car. I picked it up for $300.00 2 and a half years ago and so far only had to change the brakes. This car handles amazingly, has low kilometers and has a like new interior. She has a 3.8L EFI v6 that can get 800km to a tank highway driving.
Pros —
Pros picket it up cheap and amazing on gas
Cons —
Its just not the same as my old cougar, i liked that one better. I want that one back i miss the roar of that v8.

| “Awesome Car And I Loved It” This car i found good looking on the outside, with some great body lines, especially painted black like mine. This car had every factory option available for the 88 xr7 cougar like power sunroof/moon roof, 6 way power seats, key less entry, power mirrors, power locks, you named it had it. The seats are the same as a mustang gt of the year and they were leather. The car had a 5.0L EFI, which surprised a lot of ppl at the lights, she had some power baby. I wish i still had her.
Pros —
Good fast sporty car with cheap insurance
Cons —
The whole interior was a burgundy red, or what they called it onyx blood

| “Rare Find!”
"If you can get it started it's yours"
Pros —
It was a gift
Cons —
Minor scuffs here and there.

| “Cougar!” i had alot of problems with this car, leaked oil and antifreeze. brakes warped. power window came off track when i first got it, brakes failed once and broke the brake fluid container, shocks were bad, felt like a boat. new engine at 90,000. blew head gasket at 150,000miles. i guess that kind of stuff happens to a car after 20 years. and the fact that its a ford.
Pros —
felt safe, sounded good with subs. despite all the problems, lasted me 30,000 miles.
Cons —
boaty, brakes, radiator, engine, shocks, alot.
