Reviewing: 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited

Rented this car on our April, 2008 trip to drive from Portland, OR to Pasco, WA.  Put about 600 miles on the SUV.  Performance was pretty good with decent acceleration and handling. Lots of room for 4 adults.  Many amenities.  I own a Honda Pilot and this vehicle is definitely a condender as a replacement.  I was amazed at the fuel economy - averaging about 22 for a vehicle of this size and performance.  It was fun to drive with great confidence.

Pros — Size, Performance, Looks
Cons — Noise

The good things are the gorgeous interior and exterior design. Braking is nice and strong, and so is the 3.5 V6 engine. Handling is very comfortable and steady. It's not exactly fun, but more agile. Gas Mileage is great! But cargo and 3rd row seat is not great. Also the downside is the small size against competition, and 2nd row behind drivers seat does not allow any passage through the 3rd seat.

Pros — Interior, Exterior, Braking, Engine, Handling, Agile, Gas Mileage
Cons — Cargo, 3rd row seat, Size, No entry to the 3rd row behind captain's chair

Best set of features, performance, handling and drive for the price.  It's a SUV so don't expect 0-60 in 3 seconds, but it does move pretty quick.  Pricing is pretty attractive too.

Pros — Great Drive, Loaded Feature Set, Good Price.
Cons — Some key / basic features were forgotten.

My wife purchased an 01 Highlander Ltd 4 x 2 in 02/01.  Great vehicle (I now drive it-only 53K miles).  The 08 Ltd 4 x 2 purchased 08/07 is 10 times the vehicle.  Larger and more extras.  It will be interesting to see the 09 Toyota Venza and see how they compare.

Pros — Toyota reliability
Cons — Price-however it is worth the $

Reviewing: 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport

I'm planning to buy this SUV sometime this year (hopefully) and have already gone ahead and test driven it. My test truck was an olive green Highlander Sport, with all the options. Unfortunately traffic was a bit heavy the day I tried it out, so I barely got a feeling of the power this thing packs: it's 270hp V6 is one of the most powerful out there (compared to the Edge's/MKX's 265hp V6, 260hp V6 on the Acadia, etc.) and yet boasts superior fuel economy and overall driving comfort.
The interior is superbly appointed, with unbeatable ergonomics and unparalleled roominess. Access to the third row was easy, even for me, and said row was comfortable enough for a drive no longer than a few hours. The driver's seating position is extraordinary, and makes it easy to drive the thing, even around heavy traffic. Acceleration is impressive, braking is too, though the brakes could be a little bit stiffer in my opinion. Handling is a bit weird and feels excessively loose as it's electric and not hydraulic, but once you get the hang of it, it's really comfortable to be able to maneuver with nothing more than the tip of your fingers on your right hand.
The back-up camera and GPS are very useful.

Pros — Huge interior space, good third-row seating, powerful engine, swift acceleration, broad range of options and trims to choose from, lovely colors, fuel economy, reliability
Cons — Spongy brakes, loose handling gets a bit to get used to, price.

What a vehicle.  It drives beautifully.  Steering is crisp, with plenty of power in Limited.  Navigation is cool and entertaining, although somewhat difficult to follow with all the buttons. Nicest features are the backup screen, power lift on rear door, JBL speakers, leather heated seats, comfortable ride and ease of access to front and back seats.  Also, plenty of storage with collapsible third row of seats.

Pros — Power rear liftgate, backup screen, powerful engine, safety features galore, comfortable ride for big car.
Cons — Front door pull blocks access to power window buttons, relatively poor mileage, fat front pillars, no trailer hitch, no side beams to stop door dings.
