There are only a few roadsters on the market, the miata, Z3/4, S2000, Solstice and Sky to name most of em. The miata is definitely not the most powerful, nor the best out of the factory, but that isnt going to bother people daily driving it, and its just a finger snap away from being completely redoable. With its tiny body, and the 1.6L engine powering it, the miata is perfect on the street. Modifying it costs virtually nothing, a turbo kit and coilovers is a perfect start and in no time, it will be happy taking corners on a track or in a canyon.

Pros: Small light body, easy to modify, cheap to modify, good array of parts for it, easy to turn into a track car without much money. has several good racing classes for it including auto X and spec miata racing.
Cons: the chassis is overly flexible, a roll cage is need for racing and a roll bar should be placed on even for daily driving, its small, so its harder to notice on the street and not as safe when crashed, a hard top will be needed for racing, and should be placed on the car in rainy areas as the soft tops tend to leak

You will never have more fun driving any other car but a Mazda Miata. I bought this car for $4000 with a Borla Dual tip exhaust, light weight flywheel, and RSAdvan 16' wheels. The handling is amazing and the gearbox felt great, extremely notchy and straight forward. Once you get some sticky tires the car handles literally like its on rails. Sadly I wrecked mine coming back from the tire shop (how ironic) when I hit a patch of black ice and rolled it a few times. Highly recommend, regardless of the many "gay hairdresser" jokes you may hear. All it needs is a turbo!

Pros: SUPER FUN, amazing handling, great gearbox
Cons: Needs more power!

116bhp from a 1.6 + weighs nothing + grips like crazy + Mazda build quality = Best deal in the world

In 174000 kilometers (appx 110000 miles), the only repair I had was a change of battery.

I did chew a lot of tyres though ;-)

Pros: Fun fun fun fun
Cons: Ehhh ... none, honestly.
