This is the fourth 190E I've owned. Although this car isn't the one in the picture (that was the one it replaced) it looks almost exactly the same, the only noticable difference being an aftermarket Avantgarde grille.

The last one went to the scrap yard purely because some idiot brakedown mechanic fitted the wrong ignition coil which caused a shortcircuit that burnt out the wiring loom.

A great thing about these cars is how well they're designed, which means that they are very easy to take apart and put back together. Consequently, having had nothing serious go wrong with the old car other than an electrical fire, I bought another (cheaper, and less well looked after) with the same engine and in the same colour, stripped the old one for any parts that were needed.

Performance and handling are reasonable given the spec, fuel economy is also pretty good (especially compared to the 2.6L version I own!) at around 28-32 MPG around town, to 37-41 MPG for motorway driving.

It's quiet and comfortable, quick enough in the city, though the 2.6L version really is much better for motorway driving.

Pros — Fuel consumption, handling, comfort, build quality
Cons — Not exactly rapid (especially compared with the 2.6L), slightly dated looking now

At first glance, the 190E seems like any ordinary old Benz that is still roaming the streets, waiting to fall apart. However, these cars have a long racing heritage in the German DTMs back in the 80s and 90s. With a little bit of hard work, the squidgy feeling of the 190E can be easily eliminated and turned into a great track car.

Pros — Reliable, easy to work on, fun to drive, looks great with the right styling and taste
Cons — Working on the car drains the wallet, hard to work on due to aging chassis components such as bolts, underpowered

I bought my first 190e new in 1993. It has now done 298,000km and is still going strong! I also had a second one which I sold at over 450,000km.

Pros — Solid build, ageless, over-engineered design
Cons — Aluminium head has a tendency to corrode. Soft rear end, almost no back leg room!

We bought this used in 1998 to replace Judy's Sable for about $22,000 with 30,000 miles on it.  It is Silver with a cream interior.  It's the straight 6 2.6L with Auto Trans.  Pretty decent power (154 HP) but I have never put the throttle down on this thing for any length of time.  It has had problems to the tune of about $3000 so far(we only have only put about 50,000 miles on it in 10 years).  The AIR is gone and only the speakers on the left work???  Have also had two problems with the power windows.

Pros — Good looks.  Adequate power
Cons — Reliability

If someone were to get one... i suggest that they be prepared to pay for the high maintenance costs...

Pros — It's a Mercedes-Benz...
Cons — It was incredibly expensive to maintain...
