New for 2005, the MINI Cooper S two-door convertible featured a powered soft-top roof that resembled a hardtop roof when in place. The convertible top opened fully in just 15 seconds, or could be opened partially like a sunroof. When fully open, it stowed in a compartment above the trunk. The convertible top came with a heated rear glass window.
The MINI Cooper convertible was powered by a supercharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 168 horsepower. A new six-speed Getrag manual transmission with a steering-column-mounted tachometer was standard, while a six-speed automatic was optional.
The MINI Cooper S convertible was well-equipped with such standard features as air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, dual front and side airbags, an AM/FM stereo system with a CD player, remote keyless entry, and anti-lock brakes. It also came with 16-inch tires, a functional hood scoop, traction control, and a sport suspension. Leather seats and a navigation system were among the options.
Drivers overwhelmingly thought the MINI Cooper S convertible was a fun car to drive, and that, along with the car's economy and cuteness factor, was the major reason cited for buying the car. The convertible, with its sunroof capability, was a big hit with drivers, though some thought the car was a bit stiff over the road, with a ride that could be bumpy at times. Handling, stability, and reliability were other positive points cited by drivers.
