[Edit] An automatic all-wheel drive system that defaults to a 35/65 front/rear torque split, but adapts to changing road conditions so you don't have to, distinguishes the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer AWD from the rear-wheel drive counterpart. The mid-sized SUV also adds a limited slip center differential, but no low-range gearing. There are two engine choices -- a 4.0-liter, 210-hp V6 or a 4.3-liter, 239-hp V8, both matched with a 5-speed automatic. 16-inch alloy wheels are standard, while 17-inch chrome are optional. Traction and stability control, a tire monitor, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, automatic headlights, foglights, and dual front airbags earn five stars from the NHTSA. For added safety, you can add parking sensors and side curtain airbags for the first two rows.
A more luxurious Ford Explorer, the 2005 Mountaineer AWD features a full power setup, cruise control, a CD player, trip computer, security system, leather and aluminum trim, and intermittent front and rear wipers. The second and third rows fold flat for up to 81 cubic feet of cargo capacity, with standard roof rails and a trailer hitch adding more space. With the V6, the SUV can tow up to 5300 pounds. Option packages add dual-zone climate control, power front seats with memory, power pedals, heated seats and mirrors, second row bucket seats, a sunroof, and running boards. Fuel economy sinks to 14/18 with the AWD, which is the biggest complaint by owners. Otherwise, they love the AWD performance, safety features, and overall comfort.
