2009 Toyota Avalon XL

For 2009, Toyota upgrades the safety features for its upscale Avalon XL, adding traction control and stability control as standard equipment. As a result, the '09 Avalon XL offers the security of improved traction and balance in slippery or uneven road conditions. Also new for '09, the automaker adds brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution to the Avalon XL's four-wheel antilock brakes. Both systems help drivers maintain control of the vehicle during emergency braking. In addition, active front headrests, which help reduce whiplash in some types of rear-end collisions, are now standard. The '09 Avalon XL comes equipped with a wide range of additional standard features, including a power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, a tilt/telescoping multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, remote keyless entry, an information display, power windows and door locks, and silver metallic interior trim. A nine-speaker AM/FM audio system with an in-dash 6-CD changer and MP3 input jack also comes standard. Additional safety features include a driver's knee airbag, as well as front seat-mounted side and side-curtain airbags.

Under the hood of the '09 Avalon XL resides a 3.5-liter, double-overhead-cam V6 engine generating 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The V6 links to a six-speed shiftable automatic, and drives the Avalon XL from 0 to 60 in around 6.5 seconds. Equipped with variable valve timing for improved fuel economy, the V6 averages 19/28 mpg, according to EPA estimates, although some owners claim to get anywhere from 35 to 40 mpg on the highway. Exterior features include halogen headlights, power exterior mirrors, and dual exhaust pipes. The Avalon XL rides on 16-inch alloy wheels.
