The 2009 Ford Flex SEL AWD adds on-demand AWD performance for better traction in slippery situations, but this crossover family wagon is not a true off-roader. The AWD system comes with a limited-slip center differential and is powered by a 3.5-liter, 24-valve DOHC V6 engine. Paired with a 6-speed automatic, it puts out 262 hp and 248 ft-lbs of torque at 4,500 RPM. The 2009 Flex SEL AWD uses 18-inch alloy wheels and sits on a four-wheel independent suspension. Maximum towing capacity when outfitted with the optional trailer package is 4,100 pounds.

Other than its extra traction, the 2009 Flex SEL AWD offers the same features as the front-wheel-drive SEL. 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes come with electronic brakeforce distribution. Traction and stability control are standard, as well as a front stabilizer bar and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all three rows. Foglights, automatic headlights, halogen lamps, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror make up the lighting package, with the option to add HID lamps. A tire monitor measures pressure, and rear backup sensors help with parking.

The 2009 Flex SEL AWD seats seven in three rows (or six if you replace the second-row bench with optional captain's chairs). Both rear rows split-fold flat, along with the front passenger seat, to offer up to 83 cubic feet of storage. The cargo area features tie-downs and a net, and an optional roof rack can supplement capacity. The SEL provides leather upholstery, a 10-way power driver's and 6-way power passenger seat, heated front seats and mirrors, power windows, locks, and mirrors, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, leather and wood trim, a trip computer, a garage remote, and keypad entry. Intermittent front and rear wipers, a temperature readout and compass, tilt steering, ten cupholders, and three power outlets provide added convenience. Entertainment comes from a 10-speaker, 6-CD changer with satellite radio and an MP3 input jack. A DVD player is optional. Other options add a three-panel Vista sunroof, a refrigerator (with the captain's chairs), power-adjustable pedals, and memory settings for the driver.
