2009 Lexus RX 350 Base AWD

Intended more for slippery road conditions than for true off-road performance, the 2009 Lexus RX 350 Base AWD comes with a limited-slip center differential, but no low-range gearing. The automatic system distributes torque where needed, but reduces fuel economy somewhat to 17/22 mpg. The 3.5-liter DOHC V6 and 5-speed automatic put out 270 hp and 251 ft-lbs of torque. The midsize SUV rides on an independent Macpherson strut suspension, with 17-inch alloy wheels and all-season tires keeping a grip on the road. A tire monitor is included. Larger 18-inch wheels are available.

Like the front-wheel drive version, the 2009 RX 350 Base AWD features 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, electronic brake assist and brakeforce distribution, front and rear stabilizer bars, and traction and stability control. The dual front-side airbags come with passenger deactivation, and there are side curtain airbags for both rows. In terms of lighting, you get automatic headlights, halogen lamps, foglights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and daytime running lights. Adaptive lights with xenon HID lamps are optional, as are a rearview camera, rain-sensing wipers, an air suspension, and dynamic cruise control.

Seating five in two rows, the 2009 RX 350 Base AWD holds anywhere from 38 to 85 cubic feet of storage with the 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench down. The backseat also reclines and gets 36 inches of legroom and its own power outlet. The cargo area also has a power outlet, tiedowns, and a power liftgate. Roof rails cost extra. Full power features include remote entry, 10-way front seats (driver's memory settings optional), a garage remote, a trip computer, and a 6-CD/MP3 player, with the option to add satellite radio and an upgraded sound system. Wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, tilt and telescopic steering, a temperature display and compass, five cupholders, intermittent front and rear wipers, leather and wood accents, and dual-zone climate control contribute comfort and convenience. Most of the long list of options come in packages that include a DVD player, navigation system, a sunroof, heated seats, Bluetooth, a tow hitch, and power tilt and telescopic steering.
