The standard Carrera engine is an all-alloy, 3.6-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. It produces 325 hp @ 6,800 rpm with 273 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, the base Carrera can make the 0-60 jump in 4.8 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, the jump takes 5.2 seconds. Top speed is 177/174 mph (manual/automatic). Despite all this performance, the EPA ratings aren't as bad as you'd expect, with the manual and automatic getting identical ratings of 18/26 mpg city/highway.
The suspension features MacPherson struts sporting forged-aluminum control arms with a new and lighter subframe-based multi-link LSA (Lightweight, Stable, Agile) suspension for the rear axle structure. The front and rear wheel track have been widened for better stability and balance. The 911 uses a variable-ratio steering design that allows the driver to turn faster simply by turning the steering wheel more.
On the road, reviewers rave about the Carrera's acceleration, cornering, road feel, and braking. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Carrera's handling is "the way it accurately follows the path the driver sets." Reviewers found that once you aim the Carrera, there is little that can divert its track - bumps, potholes, or whatever.
Porsche's race-developed electronics have helped nail down the 911's once-wagging tail. The Carrera comes with the excellent Porsche Stability Management system, which has been modified to allow the driver more leeway exploring the car's handling limits. And while reviewers expect great handling, they seem surprised at the Carrera's "daily-driver livability." They find it easy and comfortable to drive under all conditions.
Porsche interiors, noted for their build quality and simplicity, are meant for drivers; they offer little to distract from the main attraction: the road. The steering wheel includes height and telescopic adjustments, while the interior has undergone further ergonomic organization to place controls within easy reach of the driver. Reviewers found the standard seating comfortable for both sport and long-distance driving. The rear seats, considered by all reviewers to be humanly uninhabitable, fold down to add 7.24 cubic feet of storage space.
Standard safety equipment includes six airbags (dual front, side, and head), antilock disc brakes, traction control, and stability control. The Porsche braking system is race-bred and one of the most effective available anywhere. The Carrera is at home on the daily commute or at the weekend competition.

The all-alloy engine in the 911 Carrera 4 is a 3.6-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. It produces 325 hp @ 6,800 rpm with 273 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, it can make the 0-60 jump in 4.9 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, it takes 5.3 seconds. Top speed is 174/171 mph (manual/automatic). Despite all this performance, the EPA estimates aren't as bad as you'd expect, with the manual and automatic getting identical city/highway ratings of 18/26 mpg.
The Carrera 4 is 44 mm wider at the rear fenders than a rear-wheel-drive 911. This extra width is due mostly to the larger tires used with the all-wheel-drive system. Under normal conditions, the average rear/front torque split is 65/35, with at least 5% of the power always sent to the front. The viscous clutch that samples each wheel's traction can instantly transfer an additional 5 to 40% of engine power to the front wheels when conditions call for extra grip.
The added traction and stability of the all-wheel-drive system draws raves from reviewers. Porsche widened the rear axle and tires to enhance the all-wheel-drive's cornering capabilities. Further, the Porsche Stability Management system is tied into the all-wheel-drive to optimize braking with additional features.
Porsche interiors, noted for their build quality and simplicity, are for drivers; they offer little to distract from the main attraction: the road. The steering wheel includes height and telescopic adjustments, while the interior has undergone further ergonomic organization to place controls within easy reach of the driver. Reviewers found the standard seating comfortable for both sport and long-distance driving. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags (dual front, side and head), antilock disc brakes, traction control, and stability control. The Porsche braking system is race-bred and one of the most effective available anywhere. The Carrera 4 is at home on the daily commute, rain or shine, or out for some weekend hot laps.

The all-alloy engine in the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is a 3.6-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. It produces 325 hp @ 6,800 rpm with 273 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, the base Carrera Cabriolet can make the 0-60 jump in 5.0 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, it takes 5.4 seconds. Top speed is 177/174 mph (manual/automatic). Despite this impressive performance, the EPA ratings aren't too bad, with the manual and automatic getting identical ratings of 18/26 mpg city/highway.
The Cabriolet removes the standard 911's metal top, but adds chassis reinforcement and electric motors. Porsche has managed to do that by adding only 51 pounds to the coupe's curb weight. The soft top has been reworked so that when up, its aerodynamics match those of the coupe (drag coefficient is 0.29). The top stows under its own tonneau cover in a 20-second push-button operation that can be done at up to 31 mph. Porsche claims the sound level, even at racetrack speeds, is nearly as low as the coupe's. The top is equipped with a heated glass rear window and rain channels to manage water flow.
On the road, reviewers find the extra weight does little to inhibit the Carrera Cabriolet's acceleration (it's 0.2 second slower to 60 mph), cornering, road feel, and braking. What all reviewers rave about is the open-air experience of a 911 in full flight. The Carrera comes with the excellent Porsche Stability Management system, which has been modified to allow the driver more leeway exploring handling limits.
Porsche interiors, noted for their build quality and simplicity, are meant for drivers; they offer little to distract from the main attraction: the open road.
Porsche convertibles come equipped with a roll-protection system that includes deployable roll bars triggered by a rollover sensor. The Porsche braking system is race-bred and one of the most effective available anywhere. While the Carrera Cabriolet is at home on the daily commute or the weekend competition, it loves the sun.

The standard Carrera S all-alloy engine is a 3.8-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. It produces 355 hp @ 6,600 rpm with 295 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, the base Carrera S can make the 0-60 jump in 4.6 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, it takes 5.0 seconds. On the road, reviewers rave about the Carrera S's acceleration, cornering, road feel, and braking. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Carrera S's handling is its standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This electronic control system adjusts the damping of the shocks according to road conditions and driver input. The driver can select "Normal" for maximum comfort or "Sport" for maximum-performance handling. Porsche's race-developed electronics have nailed down the 911's once tail-wagging rear end.
The Carrera S also comes with the excellent Porsche Stability Management system, which has been modified to allow the driver more leeway exploring the car's handling limits. The all-alloy engine in the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is a 3.6-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing, producing 325 hp @ 6,800 rpm with 273 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, it can make the 0-60 jump in 5.1 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, it takes 5.5 seconds. Top speed is 174/171 mph (manual/automatic). Despite this performance, the EPA estimates aren't too bad, with the manual and automatic equally rated at 18/26 mpg city/highway.
The Cabriolet removes the standard 911's metal top, but adds chassis reinforcement and electric motors, bringing total curb weight to only 51 pounds more than the coupe's.
The Carrera 4 is 44 mm wider at the rear fenders than a rear-wheel-drive 911 in order to handle the larger tires for the all-wheel-drive system. The average rear/front torque split is 65/35, with at least 5% of power always sent to the front. The viscous clutch that samples each wheel's traction can instantly transfer an additional 5 to 40% of engine power to the front wheels when conditions call for extra grip.
On the road, reviewers find the extra weight does little to inhibit the Carrera's acceleration (it's 0.2 second slower to 60 mph), cornering, road feel, and braking. What all reviewers rave about is the open-air experience of a 911 at full flight. The Carrera 4 comes with the excellent Porsche Stability Management system that has been modified to allow the driver more leeway exploring handling limits.
Porsche interiors, noted for their build quality and simplicity, are meant for drivers; they offer little to distract from the main attraction: the open road. The interior has undergone ergonomic reorganization to place all controls within easy reach of the driver.
Porsche convertibles come equipped with a roll-protection system that includes deployable roll bars triggered by a rollover sensor. The Porsche braking system is race-bred and one of the most effective available anywhere. While the Carrera 4 Cabriolet is at home on the daily commute in all weather conditions or at the weekend competition, it loves the sun.

The all-alloy engine in the 911 Carrera 4S is a 3.8-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. It produces 355 hp @ 6,600 rpm with 295 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, it can make the 0-60 jump in 4.6 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, that jump takes 5.0 seconds. Top speed is 179/174 mph (manual/automatic). Despite this performance, its EPA ratings aren't as bad as you'd expect, with the manual and automatic getting identical ratings of 17/24 mpg city/highway.
The Carrera 4S is 44 mm wider at the rear fenders than a rear-wheel-drive 911. This extra width is due to the additional rear track necessary to handle the all-wheel-drive system's larger tires. Under normal conditions, the average rear/front torque split is 65/35, with at least 5% of the power always sent to the front. The viscous clutch that samples each wheel's traction can instantly transfer an additional 5 to 40% of engine power to the front wheels when conditions call for extra grip. The Porsche Stability Management system is tied into the all-wheel-drive system to optimize braking.
The added traction and stability of the all-wheel-drive system draws raves from reviewers. The Carrera 4S was the first four-wheel-drive 911 to get around the famed Nurburgring test track faster (by 2 seconds) than its rear-drive sibling.
The icing on the Carrera 4S's handling cake is its standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This electronic control system adjusts the damping of the shocks according to road conditions and driver input. The driver can select "Normal" for maximum comfort or "Sport" for maximum-performance handling.
The Carrera 4S is at home on the daily commute, rain or shine, or out for some weekend hot laps.

The all-alloy engine in the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet is a 3.8-liter flat or "boxer" six equipped with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing, producing 355 hp @ 6,600 rpm with 295 foot-pounds of torque. Equipped with the highly rated six-speed manual transmission, it can make the 0-60 jump in 4.7 seconds. Backed by the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic, that jump takes 5.1 seconds. Top speed is 179/174 mph (manual/automatic). EPA ratings aren't as bad as you'd expect, with the manual and automatic getting identical ratings of 17/25 mpg city/highway.
The Cabriolet removes the standard 911's metal top and adds chassis reinforcement and electric motors, bringing curb weight to only 51 pounds more than the coupe's. The soft top was reworked so that when up, its aerodynamics match the coupe's (drag coefficient is 0.29). The top stows under its own tonneau cover in a 20-second push-button operation that can be done at up to 31 mph. Porsche claims the sound level, even at racetrack speeds, is nearly as low as the coupe's. The top is equipped with a heated glass rear window and rain channels to manage water flow.
The Carrera 4S Cabriolet is 44 mm wider at the rear fenders than a rear-wheel-drive 911. The extra width is due to the additional rear track necessary to handle the all-wheel-drive system's larger tires. Under normal conditions, the average rear/front torque split is 65/35, with at least 5% of the power always sent to the front. The viscous clutch that samples each wheel's traction can instantly transfer an additional 5 to 40% of engine power to the front wheels when conditions call for extra grip. In addition, the Porsche Stability Management system is tied into the all-wheel-drive system to optimize braking.
The icing on the Carrera 4S Cabriolet's handling cake is its standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This electronic control system adjusts the damping of the shocks according to road conditions and driver input. The driver can select "Normal" for maximum comfort or "Sport" for maximum-performance handling.
The added traction and stability of the all-wheel-drive system draws raves from reviewers. The Carrera 4S was the first four-wheel-drive 911 to get around the famed Nurburgring test track faster (by 2 seconds) than its rear-drive sibling.
Porsche interiors, noted for their build quality and simplicity, are for drivers; they offer little to distract from the main attraction: the road. The interior has undergone ergonomic reorganization to place controls within easier reach of the driver.
Porsche convertibles come equipped with a roll-protection system that includes deployable roll bars triggered by a rollover sensor. The Porsche braking system is race-bred and one of the most effective available anywhere. The Carrera 4S Cabriolet is at home on the daily commute, rain or shine, or out for some weekend hot laps, but loves fresh air.

The Porsche RS (for "rennsport," or motorsport) sets Porsche fans' hearts aflutter with memories of the marque's glorious racing cars of the early 1970s. The GT3 RS is built to motorsports homologation regulations, yet comes with air conditioning and a six-speaker stereo system.
The GT3 RS's 3.6-liter boxer six dates from the original 993-era GT1 car and has proven capable of handling up to 700 hp in extremely successful racing campaigns. For the new GT3 RS, Porsche engineers seriously reduced the engine's reciprocal weight and increased its cooling capacity. The extensive updating of the 997-generation 911 has also benefited the GT3 RS. The resulting engine is a gem, producing the world's highest horsepower per liter in a naturally aspirated production engine. With 415 hp at 7,600 rpm and 300 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm, the engine rips its way to an incredible redline at 8,400. This sends reviewers into spasms of glee, raving at the engine's ability to pull right up to its astronomical limits.
While the GT3 RS uses the same engine as its road/track sibling, the GT3, the RS has been put on a diet. Depending on which scale you use, the GT3 RS weighs 44 pounds (Porsche) or 60 pounds (Car and Driver) less than the GT3. This weight loss was achieved by the use of a plastic rear-window and engine cover and a carbon-fiber wing. Acceleration figures reflect this weight loss. Porsche gives a 4.0-second 0-60 time, which is 0.1 second faster than the GT3. Car and Driver got 4.0 seconds, while Road and Track managed 3.9 seconds. In addition, the RS replaces the more streetable GT3 dual-mass flywheel with the racetrack-specific single-mass version, which allows the engine to rev faster. Top speed is still 193 mph.
The more race oriented RS has a 1.4-inch wider rear track and is 1.7 inches wider overall to enable higher cornering speeds. And like the GT3, the 997-generation GT3 RS incorporates the traction control system from the legendary Carrera GT supercar. It can be turned off and has a much deeper trigger threshold than "ordinary" Porsches. This means the driver can push the car much closer to its limits without electronic intervention. And those limits are deep, with the GT3 RS capable of generating 1.4g on the skidpad.
The GT3 RS is equipped with the Porsche Active Suspension Management electronic/hydraulic suspension control system to broaden its operating range. Although the RS rides firmer than an ordinary 911 in its "normal" PASM mode, the "sport" mode adds track-level firmness with the capability to respond to surface changes. A revised limited-slip differential proportions the rear-wheel-drive torque to provide for improved control when blasting out of a corner.
Steering is race-car quick, with only 2.6 turns lock-to-lock. Driven with moderate caution the GT3 RS is prone to understeer in the corners. Driven the way Porsche intended, with intensity, the GT3 RS is neutral with grip returning fore and aft. Ride height, camber, toe angle, and anti-rollbar settings are all adjustable.
The interior's deeply bolstered front bucket seats (no rear seats) are leather with Alcantara inserts. The grippy fabric also covers the steering wheel, which has a straight-ahead marker at the top, as well as the handbrake, gear shift lever, and headliner. Porsche's brilliant PCCB ceramic brake system is an $8,000-plus option.
The GT3 RS is a highly refined track weapon that can be driven legally on public roads to racing events.

The 2008 GT2 represents the performance peak of the forty-four-year-old production Porsche 911. First unleashed for the 993-generation 911 (which debuted in '93), the GT2 was powered by an air-cooled, twin-turbocharged boxer six that produced 430 hp. Car and Driver labeled it "the Darth Vader of the world club-racing scene." The next-generation GT2, introduced in 2002, boosted horsepower to 456. Discontinued for the last two years, Porsche engineers were busily developing the 997-generation version. For this latest version of the GT2, Porsche engineers crossbred the fabulous 911 Turbo with the all-out track GT3 and then added some of their engineering "magic" to refine the ultimate production 911.
Based on the 911 Turbo's 3.6-liter all-alloy boxer six, the GT2 engine also has dry-sump lubrication with nine separate oil pumps, VarioCamPlus variable intake valve timing, and Nikasil-coated aluminum cylinder liners that feature individual oil-spray cooling. The GT2, however, adds the latest Borg-Warner water-cooled, variable-turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers, which are capable of 20.3 psi of boost. VTG technology uses the engine-management system to control the turbine's guide vanes, allowing higher turbine speed at lower engine rpm. This helps make turbo-lag spin away, while extending the engine's torque range. Other GT2-specific engine innovations include the new expansion intake manifold, which forces cooler air into the engine, and the new titanium exhaust system that is 20 pounds lighter than the standard 911's and provides the GT2's unique "voice."
The result is an engineering tour de force: 530 hp with 505 ft-lbs of torque from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm. The engineering, however, didn't stop with the engine. To produce even more outstanding performance, Porsche put the GT2 on a diet. The rear seats and sound-deadening were deleted, while carbon-fiber front bucket seats firmly hold the driver and a lucky passenger. Standard equipment also includes massive Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) - they reduce weight by 20 pounds per wheel and enable the GT2 to get from 0 to 186 mph back to a stop in 40 seconds! The svelte GT2, minus all-wheel drive, weighs more than 300 pounds less than its 911 Turbo sibling.
Thus, while the GT2 ties the manual-transmission 911 Turbo across the 0-60 jump at 3.7 seconds (but not the Tiptronic S 911 Turbo, which does it in a phenomenal 3.4 seconds), it soon leaves the "chubby one" behind, reaching 99 mph in 7.4 seconds, a second faster than the manual 911 Turbo and half a second faster than the automatic. The GT2 can get up to 124 mph in 11.2 seconds from a standing start, while the 911 Turbo takes a second longer. At the top end - are you ready for this? - the Turbo maxes out at 193 mph, while the GT2 continues to pull away to a "top track speed," as Porsche puts it, of 204 mph. Reviewers all seem to have had their top-speed Autobahn ride on the same rainy day in Germany, but their top speeds varied from a "low" of 195 mph to Car and Driver's incredible speedometer-indicated 331 km/h or 205 mph!
Reviewers all agree that the 911 Turbo is easier to control at such high speeds, but the rear-wheel-drive GT2 is a much more thrilling ride - it's basically a race car in road "clothing." Porsche has finessed the car's aerodynamics - the rear spoiler has ram-air ducts in its lower half and behind the rear wheels, and air extractors ventilate the intercoolers and engine compartment - and lowered the GT2 by an inch. Enlarged front grills with an air extractor for the radiator on the edge of the nose make the visual point that this car has been built for serious speed.
How serious? Serious enough that Walter Rohrl, legendary rally racer and Porsche test driver, set a Nurburgring Nordschleife record of 7 minutes, 32 seconds in a GT2 - matching the times of the 605-hp Carrera GT! Even more amazing, the GT2 comes equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), an electronic control system that adjusts shock damping according to road conditions and driver input. The driver can select "Normal" for maximum comfort or "Sport" for maximum-performance handling. Rohrl used the "Normal" setting for his record run. Car and Driver pointed out that the GT2's "Normal" setting is firmer than that of the Turbo, and even Rohrl wondered why "Sport" was necessary.
Yet reviewers had some mixed impressions of the GT2's handling. Car and Driver praised its "gorgeous steering, razor sharp and crystal clear" and its "rock solid chassis...solid unflappable high-speed perfection." But Edmunds, while praising its overall performance, felt that "even the smallest of surface imperfections makes it feel nervous."
Everyone, however, thoroughly enjoyed the GT2 Launch Assistant system - a first for Porsche - which practically guarantees perfect drag-strip launches. Put the clutch pedal and gas pedal to the floor, and slip the gear shifter into first. The engine revs to 5,000 rpm (not its redline), and your foot slips off the clutch. Don't forget to shift into second and you have 0-60 in roughly 3.7 seconds! Reviewers, however, unanimously complained about the clutch pedal's heavy action.
Walter Rohrl summed up the GT2 by saying, "This is the best 911 ever: Race car, street car - the best." But then he can handle it. The GT2 should probably come with a warning on its leather-stitched dashboard: Don't try this at home.
