With its on-demand 4WD system, the 2008 GMC Envoy SLT-1 4WD is off-road ready, thanks to three selectable modes that include high and low range gearing. But the small eight inches of ground clearance limit where you can go. Also on hand for this SUV is a locking center differential and mechanical center differential and a 4.2-liter, 285-hp DOHC I6 that delivers 291 ft-lbs of torque. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission.

The 2008 Envoy SLT-1 4WD is all about comfort and convenience. Heated leather seats, an 8-way power driver's seat with memory settings, a trip computer, wheel-mounted audio controls, and backseat audio controls are all upgrades from the SLE-2. Full power features include heated mirrors, remote entry, and a garage opener. Also in the package are cruise control, intermittent front and rear wipers, tilt steering, a CD/MP3 player with satellite radio, a power liftgate (with independent manual flip-up window), temperature gauge and compass, and front and rear cupholders and power outlets.

The cargo area expands from 43 to 80 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. A roof rack is standard. Tie-downs are included, but it costs extra to add a cargo net and cover. Side steps and splash guards also reside on the option list, along with a DVD player, sunroof, power passenger seat, power-adjustable pedals, and a sunroof. In terms of safety, the 2008 Envoy SLT-1 4WD offers dual front and side curtain airbags, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, side impact beams, traction and stability control, and a tire monitor. OnStar, foglights, halogen lamps, and automatic headlights are also included.
