The half-ton 2008 GMC Savana Cargo 1500 is a rear-wheel drive utility van powered by a 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6 with 260 ft-lbs of torque at 2800 RPM. Paired with a 4-speed automatic, it rates 15/20 mpg and can tow up to 5900 pounds with the available tow package. A 5.3-liter, 301-hp V8 that offers 325 ft-lbs of torque is optional. Available only with the 135-inch wheelbase, cargo capacity tops out at 267 cubic feet, accessed through rear barn doors. Washable rubber flooring is standard.

The 2008 Savana Cargo 1500 focuses more on function than comfort, but it does come standard with power steering, air conditioning, intermittent wipers, a radio, a tachometer, a security system, and a revised trip computer. The vinyl seats can be replaced with cloth. Other options add power windows, locks, and heated mirrors with turn signals, tilt steering, cruise control, remote entry, a CD player, and rear climate control.  

Riding on a front independent and solid live axle rear suspension, the van drives like the large truck it is. A new tire monitor measures pressure in the 16-inch wheels with all-season tires (and a full-size spare). Other safety features include 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, and dual front airbags, with the option to add side head airbags. The 2008 Savana Cargo seats two with two front power outlets up front. A swing-out side door is standard, but can be switched for an optional sliding door. A driver's side swing-out door is also available. A locking rear differential, roof lights, chrome grille and bumpers, and a breakdown warning kit are all offered.
