The 2008 GMC Savana Cargo 1500 AWD is the only trim in this lineup that comes with all-wheel drive capability. This system features a center limited slip differential, but is not meant for off-roading. It works with the front independent and solid live axle rear suspension and 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires to help reduce road slippage and provide more secure handling. The only engine option for the 2008 Savana Cargo 1500 AWD is the 5.3-liter V8, which delivers 301-hp and 325 ft-lbs of torque. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. The extra AWD weight reduces fuel economy to 13/17 mpg. A locking rear differential can be added.

4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and a new tire monitor help earn five stars in frontal crash tests. Side head airbags are optional, as are mirrors with turn signals. The van seats two, with 267 cubic feet of cargo space, accessed through both the rear barn doors or the passenger swing-out door. A sliding door and driver's swing-out door can be added. Updates to the dash include a revised trip computer. Power steering, a radio, air conditioning, intermittent wipers, two front power outlets, and a security system are all standard, but there are plenty of options. These add a 6-way power driver's seat, full power features, remote entry, tilt steering, cruise control, a CD player, heated mirrors, and rear climate control.

To add a bit more style and aggressiveness, a chrome package dresses up the grille and bumpers, and rooftop lights are also available. With the optional tow package, the 2008 Savana Cargo 1500 AWD ups towing power to 6500 pounds.
