As Kia's least-expensive car, the 2008 Kia Rio Base delivers pleasing 27/32 fuel economy with its 110-hp, 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four engine and five-speed manual transmission. Together, they produce 107 ft-lbs of torque. The front-wheel-drive sedan seats four, but is really more of a personal commuter car for the budget-minded. It rides on 14-inch steel wheels with all-season tires and a front independent and rear torsion-beam suspension.
Safety features are minimal and include dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows, four-wheel disc brakes, and a tire monitor. As such, it earns only acceptable crash-test ratings, ranging from three stars for side impact to five for driver's frontal impact. Rear seats do not fold down, and the trunk holds 12 cubic feet of cargo. Creature comforts are kept to the bare necessities, such as rear defrost, intermittent wipers, a tachometer, and front cupholders. Air conditioning, power windows and locks, and ABS brakes are not available, but a rear spoiler can be added.
