Why would anyone buy a Jeep without four-wheel drive? With that in mind, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4WD ditches the rear-wheel drive of its sibling for part-time four-wheel drive with both high- and low-range gearing. Helped by a locking rear differential and solid live axle front and rear suspension, this soft-top convertible utility vehicle can cross rough roads and running water thanks to skid plates, 10 inches of ground clearance, and large 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. A 202-hp, 3.8-liter V6 and 6-speed manual transmission deliver 240 ft-lbs of torque. A 4-speed automatic is optional, and both powertrains achieve dismal 15/19 mpg mileage estimates, which owners are willing to accept for the Jeep's off-road capabilities.
ABS brakes, traction and stability control, rollover protection, foglights, a tire monitor, and dual front-side airbags are standard. A limited-slip rear differential can be added. The 2008 Unlimited Sahara 4WD upgrades from the X trim by adding power windows and locks, satellite radio, cruise control, a leather steering wheel, security system, remote entry, and a temperature display and compass. Intermittent wipers, a CD/MP3 player with seven speakers, air conditioning, tubular side rails, and split-folding rear seats are also standard. The soft top with sunroof can be replaced with a regular soft top or a hard top. A new option this year is a navigation system in combination with the MyGIG entertainment center. Other options include a 6-CD changer, more colors, and a rear window wiper.
While owners are disappointed with its sluggish power, they say the 2008 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4WD is fun to drive, relatively quiet, and handles easily.
