[Edit] Available only in part-time, driver-engaged four-wheel drive, the 2008 Nissan Xterra Off-Road represents the genuinely rugged version of this sporty SUV. A stronger truck-like double-wishbone and front independent suspension, three skid plates, larger Bilstein shocks, and 16-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires accompany the 4-Hi and 4-Lo range gearing in the 4WD system. This enables the five-seater SUV to find roads where none exist. This is also the only Xterra trim that comes with Hill Descent Control (less wear and tear on the brakes) and Hill Start Assist, to prevent rollbacks. 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, traction and stability control, foglights, a tire monitor, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and dual front-side airbags are all standard. Side curtain airbags are optional.
Like the other trims, a 4.0-liter, DOHC V6 with 265 hp and 281 ft-lbs of torque sits under the hood, mated to either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Feature-wise, the 2008 Xterra Off-Road is like the S trim, with full power features, a CD player, cruise control, remote entry, a first aid kit, and intermittent front and rear wipers. But it also has the leather-wrapped steering wheel from the SE. The cargo area can hold up to 66 cubic feet, and rear seats split-fold 60/40. The rubber floor in the cargo area means it's easily washable, and ten tie-hooks and a track system make storage versatile. On the outside, a roof rack with lockbox and tubular step rails are standard. A DVD player, 6-CD changer with MP3 playback and satellite radio, and a navigation system are optional, along with a cargo cover and organizer. The 2008 Xterra Off-Road can also be equipped with a tow package.
