[Edit] Riding on a double-wishbone front and live-axle rear suspension, the truck-like 2008 Nissan Xterra X is a rugged outdoor SUV. As the base trim, this rear-wheel-drive five-seater comes standard with 16-inch wheels and all-season tires. It is powered by a 265-hp, 4.0-liter DOHC V6 and standard 6-speed manual transmission that deliver 281 ft-lbs of torque. A 5-speed automatic transmission is available, as are larger 17-inch wheels. 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, and dual front-side airbags are standard and help the Xterra earn four stars in crash tests. (It gets three stars in rollover tests.) Other safety features include a tire monitor, a new auto-dimming rearview mirror, and skid plates. Option packages add side curtain airbags.
The 2008 Xterra X is fairly basic in terms of equipment, though this year it gets power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, remote entry, and a temperature and compass display. These join intermittent front and rear wipers, air conditioning, and a CD player. Other nice conveniences include four power outlets (one in the trunk), six cupholders, stadium-style rear seats that split-fold 60/40, and a washable cargo area with ten tie-downs and an adjustable track. A double-level glovebox and roof-mounted lockbox hold even more. A DVD player, Bluetooth, a navigation system, and mudguards are optional on the 2008 Xterra X.
