2008 Ford Edge SEL AWD Summary
The mid-level 2008 Ford Edge SEL AWD trim combines an active all-wheel-drive system with an upgraded list of standard features, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a message center with a trip computer and compass. The AWD system, which improves the SEL's traction on slippery or rough roads, constantly monitors inputs from the vehicle as well as the driver and automatically applies torque to the appropriate wheels as necessary.
The Ford Edge SEL AWD also comes standard with a Convenience Group package, which includes automatic headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and an illuminated door entry keypad. Other features include remote keyless entry, one-touch power windows, power door locks, power exterior mirrors, quad-beam halogen headlights, and Ford's side-airbag Safety Canopy System.
The Edge SEL AWD can be ordered with a number of new options for 2008, including a power liftgate, power-folding second-row seats, and the Ford Sync, a wireless interior communications system that enables drivers to use voice commands to manage the navigation system and make cellphone calls. Other options include a Panoramic Vista roof, a DVD rear entertainment system, and a DVD-based navigation system.
A 3.5-liter Duratec 35 V6 engine, which produces 265 horsepower, resides under the hood of the hunky, low-slung Edge SEL AWD. The engine links to a six-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears, which helps improve fuel efficiency.
Features such as AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, MacPherson struts, and an independent suspension provide good traction, handling, and stability, according to drivers and reviewers, although some note that the brakes have less stopping power than a vehicle in this class should. Overall, though, the Edge SEL AWD gets good marks in most categories.
