2008 Ford Focus S Summary
Even though it comes with a stripped-down list of standard features, the 2008 Ford Focus S sedan still offers plenty of car for drivers on a budget. In addition to an overall redesign both inside and out, the Focus S comes with a number of new features, including Ice Blue backlighting for the instrument gauges and control knobs, six standard airbags including side-curtain airbags, a top-of-the-dash display with multifunction readouts, a single-disc CD player with an MP3 input jack and speed-sensitive volume control, and optional Sirius satellite radio.
Other standard features include a tire pressure monitoring system, air conditioning, halogen headlights, a passive antitheft system, and a tilt steering wheel. Power rack-and-pinion steering and an upgraded suspension with MacPherson struts in the front are also part of the package.
A 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter Duratec 20 inline four-cylinder engine powers the Focus S sedan. The engine has been updated to provide improved smoothness, responsiveness, and fuel efficiency. As a result, Ford notes that the 2008 Focus can achieve a maximum of 35 mpg on the highway. The engine links to either a five-speed manual transmission, which comes standard, or a four-speed automatic, available as an option.
Drivers and reviewers like the Focus's ride quality, handling, and peppy engine, although some reviewers recommend the manual shifter over the automatic transmission, noting that the automatic's downshifts are rough when pushed under aggressive driving. The Focus S also gets high marks for fuel efficiency, braking, and steering, though some find the rear seat cramped for adults. Cargo space can be limited as well, although the fold-down rear seats help provide space for larger items.
