To make its top-of-the-line luxury-oriented 2008 Commander Overland even better, Jeep added a Quadra-Trac II active full-time four-wheel-drive system to the vehicle's list of standard equipment. The system, which includes a new four-wheel Brake Traction Control System, improves the Overland's traction and stability on slippery roads by automatically transferring torque to the individual wheels with the most grip on the road.

A 330-horsepower, 5.7-liter HEMI V8 multi-displacement engine powers the Overland. The engine's multi-displacement system automatically disengages four of the HEMI's eight cylinders at cruising speeds or under light acceleration to conserve fuel. This results in a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy, according to Jeep. However, when the Overland requires maximum power, all eight cylinders engage, working along with a higher axle gear ratio to improve the Overland's acceleration, power when climbing grades, and towing capacity.

The Overland comes equipped with a Trailer Tow package as standard equipment, as well as 18-inch all-terrain tires with aluminum chrome-clad wheels, a Class IV trailer hitch, and a power rear liftgate. The Overland receives the luxury treatment inside as well, with such standard features as leather-trimmed seats that are heated in the front, two-tone seat accents, a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof with second-row skylights, and powered and heated fold-away auto-dimming mirrors with a memory function.

The Overland also comes with the MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System, a new feature for 2008. The 276-watt premium sound system includes a GPS navigation system with a touchscreen display monitor, six Bose Acoustics speakers, and a 20-gigabyte hard drive for storing music and photos. The UConnect Bluetooth hands-free communication system also comes standard.

The Commander Overland can accommodate seven passengers, thanks to a third-row seat. In addition, the second-row seats fold flat to provide additional cargo space. Safety features include a ParkView rear backup camera and side-curtain airbags, while antilock brakes, an Electronic Stability Program, and Brake Assist, as well as rack-and-pinion steering, help improve the Commander Overland's stability, traction, and handling.

Drivers and reviewers note that, while the Commander Overland can haul up to seven passengers, the third-row seat can be cramped for adults. The Overland's safety features receive high marks, as does the Overland's towing capacity and off-road capabilities. However, some note that while the Overland's ride is generally smooth and handling is responsive, the big SUV still has an overall trucklike feel.
