Full-time all-wheel drive with low-range gearing and a limited slip Torsen center and rear differential, combined with a monster 6.0-liter, 390-hp V8, makes this five-seater SUV a powerful contender on and off the road. The AWD system can be combined with an off-road package that adds skid plates and underbody protection. Sportier performance is provided by a stiffer and lower suspension, stronger brakes and shocks, larger stabilizer bars, a self-leveling suspension, and 20-inch wheels with all-season tires. The 2008 Trailblazer SS1 AWD gets four and five-start front and side impact ratings, thanks to dual front airbags and new side curtain airbags for both rows, StabiliTrac, 4-wheel ABS brakes, a tire monitor, rollover protection, automatic headlights, foglights, daytime running lights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Driver's impact and rollover test garner average 3-star ratings.
The extra weight from the AWD means the SUV can only two 6600 pounds with a standard trailer hitch and optional tow hooks. A roof rack and running boards are also standard, as are a sportier exterior (body-colored molding, mesh grille, badging). Interior highlights include an 8-way power driver's seat, cruise control, wheel-mounted audio controls, rear audio and climate control, a CD player, intermittent front and rear wipers, five power outlets, keyless entry, full power features, heated mirrors, a security system, trip computer, and temperature and compass display. Storage compartments are found overhead, in the front, and on the floor. Tie-downs are featured in the 41 cubic foot cargo area that expands to 80 with the rear seats folded. A cargo cover and net are optional. New this year is XM radio. Options include a sunroof, 17-inch wheels, a 6-CD changer, and upgraded audio system.
