The 2008 Explorer XLT 4WD adds Ford's ControlTrac 4X4 System to the XLT's entry-level list of standard features. ControlTrac gives drivers the ability to control the 4X4 system by turning a rotary knob to select high or low four-wheel-drive mode, 4X4 Auto (which transfers power to the appropriate wheels), or two-wheel-drive mode.

Also helping drivers keep control of the Explorer in difficult driving conditions is an AdvanceTrac traction control system with Roll Stability Control (RSC). An Intelligent Safety System makes adjustments to the airbags, seatbelts, and steering column in an emergency situation, while a Safety Canopy system, which includes side airbags, helps keep passengers safe in the event of an accident.

The Explorer XLT 4WD also comes equipped with such standard features as a tire pressure monitoring system, front low-back bucket seats with two-way adjustable head restraints, power windows and door locks, a keyless entry system, air conditioning, and an MP3 input jack for the AM/FM/CD sound system.

In addition, the 2008 Explorer XLT 4WD includes a new capless fuel filling system (available late in the model year), which opens and closes automatically when drivers insert or extract a fuel pump nozzle. The new capless system provides a tighter seal than a typical gas cap, according to Ford.

A 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter, single-overhead-cam V6 engine provides power for the 2008 Explorer XLT 4WD. The engine links to a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A maintenance-free battery, Class II towing hitch, and 16-inch aluminum wheels are also included in the XLT 4WD package.
