Adhering to California's tough emissions requirements, the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta SEL PZEV offers a low-emissions version of the 20-valve, 2.5-liter DOHC inline-five engine, while still putting out 170 hp and 177 ft-lbs of torque. Fuel economy also stays the same as the non-PZEV engine, averaging 21/29 mpg. In the SEL, the engine is paired only with a 6-speed shiftable automatic. The front-wheel-drive, midsize sedan seats four, with 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a fold-flat front passenger seat. The large trunk holds 16 cubic feet and can be accessed via an armest/pass-through. A power outlet is included in the trunk, with the option to add tiedowns and a net.

There is also a power outlet up front, along with a host of standard features. The 2008 Jetta SEL PZEV upgrades from the SE with wheel-mounted audio controls for the 6-CD changer, satellite radio, a compass, and a trip computer. These join already standard power windows, locks, and heated mirrors, remote entry, a power sunroof, a 2-way power driver's seat, cruise control, a security system, and intermittent wipers. Front seats are heated, and all seats are covered in leatherette, which complements the leather on the steering wheel and shifter. An MP3 input jack sits in the glovebox. A DVD-based navigation system is an SEL-only option.

Larger 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires are included in the 2008 Jetta SEL PZEV, and they come with their own tire monitor. Supplementing its road grip are standard traction and stability control and 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. Rear side curtain airbags join the dual front-side and side curtain airbags up front. They feature front passenger deactivation sensors. Another nice safety feature is the turn signals in the side mirrors. Fully outfitted, there are few options left, though owners wish Bluetooth was available. A Sport Kit adds a front and rear spoiler and side sill extensions.
