The rear wheel drive 4x2 SR5 was also available with a V-8 engine. This 4.7 liter power plant provided the 4300 pound SUV with 260 horsepower and 306 pound feet of torque. Swapping the V-6 for the V-8 bumped the towing capacity from 5000 to 7300 pounds, while Fuel economy dropped to 15/19 mpg. All 2006 4Runners used a five speed automatic transmission.
For 2006, the entire 4Runner line was revamped, with most changes dealing with the exterior styling.
The bumpers and grille were redesigned, and new headlights and taillights were added. Thicker glass was included to help cut down wind noise.
The SR5 is the 4Runner's base level trim; one of three available styles for 2006. Each trim was available in four configurations. The SR5 models came equipped with a CD sound system, cruise control, keyless entry, full power accessories, and running boards.
