2003 Lincoln Navigator Ultimate 4WD Summary

Everything you could want in a full-sized SUV is found on the 2003 Navigator Ultimate 4x4, hence its name. That list includes the novel power-deployable running boards, which automatically extend 4 inches outward when a door is opened and retract when doors are closed. This big rig also came with rear park-assist, more or less a necessity for something this size.

Power was not in excess with this vehicle, whose 5.4-liter V8 put out 300 horsepower, a deficit of 45 horses compared to its rival, the Cadillac Escalade ESV. When it comes to torque, the Navigator supplies 355 lb.-ft. at 2750 rpm compared to the Escalade's 380 lb.-ft. at 4000 rpm. The Ultimate Navigator 4x4 is often called upon to tow, and it's definitely capable, with a capacity of 8300 pounds.

The Ultimate 4WD's Control Trac system makes it a true 4x4, although there is an Automatic setting (in addition to 2 High, 4 High, and 4 Low). But it isn't merely a workhorse - it's a luxurious ride, complete with niceties such as a power liftgate, heated and cooled power-adjustable leather seats (front), gas-discharged headlights, and a power-folding rear seat that offers seating for two or three or retracts with a touch when it's cargo you must accommodate. The standard AdvanceTrac stability and traction control really makes for safe travel in poor conditions.

Owners of this Navigator trim live with its meager 12 mpg city and 16 mpg highway. They bought it for its heft, which contributes to feelings of both privilege and safety, and the frequent fueling came as no surprise. There have been complaints about electrical problems (side mirrors and windows activating on their own) and suspension troubles, as well as some expressed displeasure at the amount of plastic in this expensive vehicle.
