[Edit] A 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine powers the 2008 Toyota Highlander base model. The V6 engine links to a five-speed automatic transmission, which comes standard.
Other standard features include antilock brakes, traction control, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic power steering, and a new feature called enhanced vehicle stability control. The Highlander is also the first Toyota vehicle with active head restraints and a new hood and fender designed to crumple on impact with a pedestrian.
The midsize SUV features a Center Stow seat, which can be hidden beneath the front console when not in use, used as a center console between the two middle seats, or unfolded so the vehicle can carry seven passengers. In addition, both the second and third rows can be folded down to create a flat cargo area.
Toyota notes that the Highlander will be loaded with standard features, while options will include leather trim, heated seats, a 9-speaker JBL sound system with a CD changer, and a tow package with 5,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity.
