The Tacoma PreRunner fits the bold and aggressive look of a capable 4x4 with with comparatively refined road manners. Despite their appearance, PreRunners are rear wheel drive vehicles primarily intended for on-road use. The PreRunner name is more of a trim level than a body style, as it is available with regular cab, Double Cab, and Access Cab layouts. It is a more expensive option than the regular 4x2 trucks.
The Double Cab PreRunner has four full size doors and a spacious rear seat. All Double Cab Tacomas are only available with the V-6. This 4.0 liter engine makes 236 horsepower and provides 266 pound-feet of torque. It is teamed with either a 5-speed automatic transmission, but a 6-speed manual is also available with several V-6 models. The Tacoma's V-6 also uses Toyota's older Variable valve Timing + intelligence system, which not only boosts power, but also lowers emissions and improves fuel economy. EPA numbers are not currently available, but this Tacoma is expected to average in the high teens for mpg in mixed driving.
Both TRD options and the V-6 towing package are available on this model, but the SR5 packages are not. The PreRunner Double cab comes standard with air conditioning, CD player, rear cup holders, power windows, and two 12V power outlets. Due to the large cab, this model only has a five foot bed, but a long bed variation is also available.
