[Edit] The base-model Mountaineer trim, the rear-wheel-drive V6, has a lot more going for it than just its namesake engine. But the 4.0-liter SOHC powerplant deserves some attention for getting the whole thing going.
Although it's the most basic Mountaineer, it still has a fair array of amenities, including dual-zone auto climate control, power heated side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a vehicle message center, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with auxiliary controls for cruise, climate, and audio. What may please buyers most, at least those who are prone to worry, is the Safety Canopy, which now comes with standard side-curtain airbags.
Some things you can add to your Mountaineer V6 are the Quad Seats Package (adds head restraints and center console to second row), the Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System, the upgraded (Class III/IV) Trailer Tow Package, and the Reverse Sensing System. The Navigation and Moonroof Package is not available on this trim, but you may add the moonroof separately.
Running boards can be added, but they are not the nifty power-deployable ones available on the Premier trims. Roof-rail crossbars also are available, and you can opt for a power-fold feature on the third-row seat.
The NHTSA has awarded the Mountaineer a full 5 stars in all but the Rollover Test, in which it scored a mediocre 3. In the IIHS Frontal Offset Crash Test, the vehicle received highest-level rankings across the board.
This overview covers this specific trim only. You can read more on our 2007 Mercury Mountaineer page.
