2005 Volvo V70 2.4

There are base models, and there are base models. And if the Volvo 2.4 is considered basic, then the rest of the automaking world has a lot to learn from the Swedes.
  
Although the ever-popular V70 was certainly not clamoring for improvement, it received a slight makeover for 2005 with new headlight and taillight designs as well as changes to the chrome grille, center console, and windshield wipers.

The top safety technology continues to come standard in these wagons, as in all Volvos. That means front and side-impact airbags as well as overhead curtain airbags, plus the SIPS (side-impact protection) and WHIPS (whiplash protection) systems, all of which contribute to a very safe feeling for driver and passengers.

Stability Traction Control is standard on the 2.4 models, but it does not include the Active Yaw Control (which aids with directional stability in a lateral skid) found on the higher-priced 2.5T and T5 trims. A multi-link rear suspension and front and rear anti-roll bars contribute to the wonderful handling; speed-sensitive steering is also standard.

User reviews invariably noted the fantastic interior comfort, the exceptional ride, and the excellent handling. Some were surprised at the pep that this �basic� engine (2.4-liter, 168 hp) afforded. Cargo space and the standard-equipment heated power mirrors also received accolades. One driver mentioned the generously-sized windows, and young parents thanked the Swedish stars for the integrated booster seats, and countless tots are probably thanking them, too, for the better view that they lend.

Complaints concerning the 2005 V70 2.4 seemed minor: a slightly cramped backseat, somewhat high cost of maintenance, and a slight blind spot over the shoulder.
