The 2006 Nissan Xterra X 4WD is a new trim this year, and is identical to its rear-wheel drive sibling in terms of engines and features.  The main difference is the four-wheel drive capability, combined with standard stability and traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution, and ABS brakes.  Other safety features include dual front-side airbags, 16-inch wheels, a tire monitor, and skid plates.  The compact SUV is powered by a 265-hp 4.0-liter V6 and choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.  Side curtain airbags are optional.

Though it doesn't come overstocked, the 2006 Xterra X 4WD does have air conditioning, a CD player, intermittent front and rear wipers, and tilt steering.  Rear seats split-fold flat for 66 cubic feet of room.  There are hooks, compartments, and nets throughout, and a sturdy roof rack up above.  Options include power features, cruise control, a security system, auto-dimming mirror, and a trailer hitch.  Drivers say the 2006 Xterra X 4WD is rugged and dependable, with good off-road performance.  Gas mileage is a bit lacking.
