For those actually wanting to use an SUV for off-roading or more rugged trips than to the grocery store, the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder SE Off-Road is designed for you.  It features part-time and automatic on-demand 4-wheel drive, like the regular LE 4X4, but adds on a stiffer suspension, skid plates, performance tires, and stronger shocks and brakes.  Two useful features are Hill Descent Control, that adjusts speed so you don't have to keep tapping the brakes, and Hill Start Assist, so you don't slip back.  The 2006 Pathfinder SE Off-Road carries the same 4.0-liter, 270-hp V6 engine and 5-speed automatic, with 291 lb-ft of torque.

Standard equipment is much like the SE, with full power features, a power driver's seat, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a CD changer, trip computer, compass, leather trim, intermittent front and rear wipers, and dual zone climate control.  Safety features include ABS brakes, a tire monitor, traction and stability control, foglights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and dual front airbags. To beef up the luxury, you can add leather seats, heated seats and mirrors, a DVD player, satellite radio, a sunroof, and a power passenger seat.  Side impact bags and auto headlights can also be added.  Good handling, lots of power, and a good use of interior space are praise by owners of the 2006 Pathfinder SE Off-Road, but they're not pleased with the plastic interior materials, limited third row legroom, and wallet-crushing gas mileage.
