Chevrolet's 1999 Astro STD AWD (base model, all-wheel drive) is much the same as the RWD version of the same. Chevrolet introduced a new transfer case on its AWD 1999 Astros, which shifted control from the rear wheels to the front
upon sensing tire slippage, thus improving driver control.

AWD Astros are always heavier than their two-wheel-drive counterparts, thus getting worse gas mileage. One owner review said that the AWD is reputed to be less reliable than RWD, and added, "My friend, who owns a 1999 AWD Astro, reports after driving mine that it handles much better on the road."
