The 2006 Toyota Tacoma is sandwiched between two years of notable changes. The 2005 model year brought a complete redesign, and several interior revisions came in 2007.  
The eighteen model lineup begins with this very modestly priced and minimally equipped base model, which can be had for more than $10,000 less than the top shelf Tacoma.  The Regular Cab models come standard with a CD audio system and a full size spare.  Some convenience and power features packages are available, but these models are not eligible for as many add-ons as the Access or Double Cab variations.
The power is delivered by a 2.7 liter DOHC inline four, which sends 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels.  This engine is paired with a five speed manual transmission, but a four speed automatic is optional.  This model is 20 inches shorter and half a ton lighter than the largest Tacoma, which certainly helps fuel economy.  The four cylinder-equipped Regular Cab will get 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
This is the lightest-duty Tacoma, able to tow just 3500 pounds and carry a payload of 1370 pounds.
