Surprisingly good off-road, thanks to the low-range gearing, the 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara EX 4WD offers more driving versatility. The only caveat is not to engage the system on dry pavement. Drivers enjoy the handling of the front independent and solid live axle rear suspension. They were not happy with the anemic 2.5-liter DOHC V6 engine, although its 165-hp and 162 ft-lb ratings are comparable to similarly-sized cars. An optional tow hitch allows 1500 pounds of towing. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission available on the EX.

The 2005 Grand Vitara EX adds plenty to the long list of standard safety features. Inside the cabin you'll find full power accessories, remote entry, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a moonroof, and a CD player. More practical items include intermittent front wipers, a rear window wiper, tilt and power steering, automatic climate control, and heated mirrors. A tachometer resides close by the electroluminescent dash gauges. Outside, the SUV upgrades to standard foglights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler. On the safety front, you get dual front airbags, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, skid plates, automatic headlights, and daytime running lights.

The 2005 Grand Vitara EX 4WD seats four or five passengers, though rear legroom is cramped at only 30.6 inches. Rear seats split-fold onto the cargo hold, which can hold a maximum of 50 cubic feet when the seats are down. Tiedowns help secure items, while the cargo cover keeps them hidden.
