The 2003 Ford Explorer XLT was a slightly more upscale trim than the baseline XLS model, but the main differences were cosmetic.  XLT buyers who chose the all-wheel drive option were, most likely, drawn by the promise of improved roadworthiness and better handling in adverse conditions.  

However, many reviewers, and some drivers, opined that the four-wheel drive system actually offered more stability, and the all-wheel drive options on the Explorer were discontinued as of 2005.
