The 2005 BMW 530i received a makeover for 2005, although the vehicle's 225-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine was the same powerplant used by BMW for the 530 the previous few years (an engine upgrade would come in 2006). A six-speed manual transmission was standard, while a six-speed automatic overdrive transmission was optional.
While some still bicker about the Microsoft-powered iDrive software, there are technological features that make driving easier. Most notable is the 530i's active steering, which minimizes turns to make everyday tasks like u-turns and parallel parking a snap. Others driver-assistance features include traction control, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
Beyond that, the 530i was well-equipped with interior and exterior features, including a power sunroof, multi-zone climate control, power steering, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, wood interior trim, heated exterior mirrors, a power-adjustable driver's seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, an anti-theft alarm system, a full range of airbags, and an AM/FM stereo system with a CD player.
Generally, drivers liked the 530i's sleek new design, as well as its responsive handling, comfortable interior, and smooth transmission. The car's iDrive communications and entertainment system still drew complaints from drivers, though, especially when trying to do something as simple as access the radio tuner.
