2006 BMW 330ci convertible Summary
In 2006, BMW did a tires up revision of the 3 Series. In keeping with their tradition, the coupes, convertibles, which were substantially freshened in 2004, and M series remained unchanged waiting for a later redesign.
The 330ci coupe retains the 2005 3.0-liter, dohc 24-valve, 225-hp inline six cylinder engine. There is a Performance Package that raises power to 235 hp. The standard manual six-speed and optional five-speed automatic also carry over from last year; a six-speed Sequential Manual transmission is also available - most reviews found this transmission best for full out performance pursuits and not for everyday driving. Consumer Guide managed 0-60 in 6.8 seconds with a manual 330Ci coupe, while the convertible is probably in the mid-7 second range. The convertible achieved a 19/28 mpg rating using premium fuel.
Performance is adequate given the engine's hp rating and its firm handling lives up to the BMW sport driving dynamics. Wind noise is considerable in the convertible with the canvas top up - and that takes about 60 seconds from a one button switch.
The front bucket seats are comfortable, but the back is a bit cramp. Gauges and instruments are large, easy-to-read, and clearly marked. Various control switches and push-buttons are conveniently placed. The trunk is small. The 330Ci comes standard with rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlight control. The convertible's windshield slants 2 degrees more than the sedan.
Safety equipment includes ABS, traction and stability control, side-impact airbags and curtain-type bags for the front side seats. Yet, Consumer Guide found mediocre traction in snow.
Although Consumer Guide points out that the 2006 330ci design is vintage 1999 and due for an overhaul, they still find, "no comparable rival is more refined or dynamically capable overall." In other words, it could be a good buy if you can find it for a reasonable price.
