[Edit] For more than 50 years the Mercedes-Benz SL class of automobiles has been synonymous with luxury. SL -- meaning sport light or, in German, Sport Leicht, first appeared in 1954 with the introduction of the 1954 300SL "Gullwing." The Gullwing took its name from the upward opening passenger doors.
The most recent, major overhaul for SL cars came in 2001. After a decade with only minor cosmetic changes, Mercedes-Benz was losing market share to more modern looking cars, such as the Jaguar XK8.
Among the SL vehicles offered in its most recent incarnation are the SL500 Roadster, the limited and rare SL55 AMG and SL65 AMG, the SL600 Roadster, and the SL350, which is only available in Europe.
