Lexus LS 460 History

The new LS 460 does much more than parallel park itself. For 2007, Lexus brings forth two new versions of its celebrated flagship. This fourth generation of the LS sedan will include standard wheelbase and long wheelbase options. The LS 460 L will compete with other long wheelbase flagships like the Mercedes S550 L, BMW 750iL, and Audi A-8 L. Therefore, it will have a considerably higher sticker price than the base LS 460.

Both LSs will receive an entirely new engine, signifying the first total redesign in LS series history. This new 4.6-liter V8 produces 380 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. Such power launches the 4,332-pound sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The new engine is supported by a new Dual Variable Valve Timing + intelligence system (VVT-iE). The E represents new electronically controlled valve timing, another first, which helps optimize fuel intake efficiency. This new system not only results in more power, but it has also improved fuel economy beyond the prior LS 430's rating. The new 460 will get 19 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

This breakthrough engine system is teamed with the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, which includes a manual shiftgate. All LSs are rear wheel drive, but an AWD LS may be on the way later this year. Lexus has already announced the availability of AWD on the upcoming LS 600h.

In addition to the Advanced Parking Guidance System with Intelligent Park Assist, the new LS 460 continues to push the envelope with comfort, convenience, and safety technology. A well-equipped LS features an optional 19-speaker Mark Levinson sound system with a 30-gigabyte hard drive, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and a new voice-operated navigation system with real-time traffic reporting. A new Lexus Pre-Collision System will use three cameras to monitor safety both inside and out and is capable of detecting pedestrians. The LS 460 L offers additional options to improve the experience of back-seat passengers.
