Mercedes-Benz CLK350 History

The Mercedes-Benz CLK350 debuted in 2006 as a replacement for the CLK320 in the automaker's lineup and continued in the CLK320's tire tracks by offering a winning combination of sporty exterior styling, aggressive power, and high-end interior features.

The CLK350's new 3.5-liter, 24-valve, double-overhead-cam V6 engine produced 268 horsepower, a jump of 53 horsepower over the previous entry-level CLK's powerplant. The goal was to continue to offer an aggressive yet functional sport coupe (as well as a cabriolet) that was refined enough to use for daily driving but that could also provide an adrenaline rush for those who wanted to break loose from the world of sedate family sedans.

In addition to its more-powerful engine, the CLK350 came with a new optional Sport Appearance Package that added such features as a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels, rubber-studded stainless steel pedals, and a choice of Sport or Luxury interior. Standard features for the CLK350 included leather upholstery, Burl Walnut wood trim, window curtain airbags, and an Electronic Stability Program.

The rear-wheel-drive CLK350 was designed to provide a smooth, quiet ride with good acceleration and nimble handling, and most drivers and reviewers agree that the car easily met those goals. Drivers had the option of relying on the car's seven-speed automatic transmission to move the car forward, or could manually shift gears by nudging the shift level left or right, providing another level of sporty driving.

Drivers also could opt for the CLK350 in the cabriolet, or convertible, trim, which came with a triple-insulated soft top that retracted in 17 seconds for open-air driving. All together, it added up to a package that delivered precise handling, responsive power, and a comfortable interior.
