Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG History
Introduced in 2001, the Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG was, in essence, the high-tech sports version of the automaker's upscale S-Class, upon which it was based. The CL55's exterior, interior, and engine were all tweaked and upgraded by AMG, the in-house performance tuner for Mercedes. The result was a dynamic coupe that was among the world's most coveted vehicles, and a definite player in the growing, and increasingly competitive, luxury coupe segment of the auto industry.
The CL55's exterior design was enhanced with body additions and rocker panels to improve aerodynamics, while under the hood was an ultra-responsive 354-horsepower, 5.5-liter all-aluminum V8 engine that was assembled by hand and even signed by the engineers who built it.
In 2003, the CL55 AMG received a boost in horsepower, from 354 horsepower to a whopping 493 hp, an increase of 139 horsepower. The power boost was accomplished with the addition of a supercharger, which itself was a sight to behold.
A five-speed automatic overdrive transmission was standard in the CL55. Special 18-inch AMG wheels were also part of the package.
Traditionally the Mercedes-Benz AMG models received all the carmaker's newest technology, and the CL55 AMG was no exception. A special Active Body Control (ABC) stability system helped reduce body roll to ensure a comfortable yet sporty ride. The CL55 was also equipped with such cutting-edge technologies as bi-xenon high-intensity headlights, electrochromatic exterior and rear-view mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, two-zone automatic climate control, a self-leveling suspension, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and traction control.
Inside, standard features included leather seats (heated in the front), a power-adjustable driver's seat with memory, power steering, a lighted entry system, power heated mirrors, a power sunroof, a trip computer, dual front and side airbags, and a premium audio system.
