History of the Lincoln LS
[Edit] Lincoln's sportiest car is also its least expensive. Introduced in 2000, the Lincoln LS sought to combine a sporty drive with a mid-sized luxury sedan to compete with entries from BMW and Mercedes and appeal to a younger audience. Though somewhat less refined from an engineering and styling standpoint, the rear-wheel drive LS held its own with a choice of 3.0 V6 or 3.9 V8 engine, winning Motor Trend's Car of the Year award. Originally offered with either a 5-speed auto tran 5-speed manual, it was the first Lincoln to offer a manual transmission in many years.
Built on a platform shared by the Jaguar S-series and revamped Thunderbird, the LS went through major updates in 2003, most notably the loss of the manual transmission and an increase in horsepower. Some minor front and rear end restyling and the addition of innovation options such as a touch-screen DVD-based navigation system and a THX sound system helped make the Lincoln LS stand out from the crowd. In its last year, 2006, the various trim levels were pared down to one Sport, which basically adopted the stiffer sports suspension and larger 17-inch wheels of a previously optional package.
Since 2003, it has consistently won high marks from both the NHTSA and Insurance Institute, thanks to standard ABS brakes, traction control, and dual front-side airbags. Stability control and side curtain bags are available as options. Though existing in the shadow of its German rivals, the Lincoln LS impressed owners with its V8 power, smooth handling, and comfortable interior. If fuel-economy and backseat legroom could have been improved, the mid-sized luxury sedan might have won over more fans.
